Q: I read cork board in the reviews . What is it used for ? Is it mandatory for paper quilling ?

I also have used a piece of Styrofoam instead of a cork board. The Styrofoam was packing from a computer purchase. The flat surface is about 10" by 12", and it works great.

Q: Would instructions be clear enough for an 8-year-old?

The reading level may be a bit high for some 8 year olds. The instructions are clear and in most cases there are illustrations. I would say give it a try!

I would say there is about 50 strips of paper.

I think it would be perfect for a 13 year old girl! It doesn't have a cork board, but it comes with everything you'll need to learn the art of quilling! It includes all the essentials such as a Circle Sizer Ruler, a slotted tool, needle tool, fine-tip tweezers, glue pen, 1/8" quilling paper, assorted cards and it comes in a handy double-sided storage box. The manufacturer has a video on YouTube showing all the contents, as well as making a heart tag.
