🔍 Discover Density Like Never Before!
The hand2mind Equal Mass Materials kit is an essential science supply for elementary classrooms, featuring five different materials—brass, aluminum, nylon, PVC, and clear acrylic—each with equal mass (16 grams) and a diameter of 1/2 inch. This kit is designed to help students explore the concepts of mass, density, and volume through engaging, hands-on experiments.

Five different materials and densities
Five different materials: metals, plastics, and same diameter cylinders and same masses. Shows different densities very clearly. Also, they fit into 50 ml and 100 ml plastic graduated cylinders if you wish to measure volume via displacement. They work!

I ordered these for my 6th grade Chemistry course and it shipped quick but the box that the materials are in was re-taped as if it was used before and then scotched tape over the brown tape to resell so it is not new even though it was advertised as so. I am very appreciative to have found exactly what I needed to teach displacement in our Density chapter!

Inaccurate description
I requested a refund and bought this a second time hoping it was just a fluke, but both sets were the same and did not match the description. There is a guide included that matches the description of what *should* be included (brass, aluminum, nylon, PVC and clear acrylic), but the set itself is from United Scientific and includes aluminum, copper, steel, tin, and zinc (there is also a second guide inside the box with that information). Because I had bought these based on the description to match our density cube set, and I wanted the materials shown with very distinct rod lengths, what I received will not work for my lessons.

Good set - unfortunately expensive.

inaccurate paperwork
I purchased these for a density lab as a substitution for FLINN density cylinders. My students followed the lab as directed and when they calculated the density a few of the numbers are no matching up to the information provided in the package. First, if you look at the labeled diagram and compare it to the material identification listed by the length you will find that the three longest rods are identified incorrectly. The picture is more accurate when it comes to actual density. The black rod should be the third shortest rod and it is PVC. The density on this one matches our lab data as well at 1.35-1.45 g/cm3 (we came on at 1.44/1.45). The clear rod is obviously acrylic--density coming in at 1.09-1.14 according to lab data...the clear acrylic is the 4th shortest rod not longest as identified in the measurement data provided in the paperwork. I guess I get what I pay for. But in general...most of the materials worked well...the density for the nylon wasn't as easily distinguishable by density in any of my three classes....Finally, the masses are not the same. The acrylic is the largest difference at 15.8 g...the rest are between 16.2-16.41.

Order came incomplete
I ordered two kits to use with my science classes, and one of the kits was missing a clear acrylic specimen. I needed it for classroom use right away, so we used the kits. I was unsuccessful in finding a way to just have the one missing piece sent to me.

Not very equal
Nice enough for the price. But actually, the 5 parts are not very equal in mass. They range from 14.5 to 16.8 grams. That 's unimpressive, especially since they just need to adjust the lengths of the cylinders.
