How long is the head of the vacuum (not the hose)?

The head of the vacuum is almost exactly 6 inches.

Do you or don't you have to siphon using your mouth? If so, not for me. Any other suggestions. Thanks!

No, you do not need to use your mouth to siphon:) Just your hand and follow the instructions in the package. There are also you tube videos showing how to use it.

Will this work on a one gallon tank?

Yes it will, it will be a tight squeeze but will do the trick

How do you get the vacum part to start?

Directions come with the kit. You submerge the entire tube and let out air bubbles. Lift tube end and hold it lower than tank water level and it immediately starts draining. If not, you simply move the larger part up and down in the tank.
