It's an acrylic piece of plastic that sits in the insert where the lights are. It's not hard to set up. Getting that brown film paper off was irritating. The cable that comes with it is short, but most of us either have or know someone with longer cables that could work for it. There's room for batteries in it, but I didn't try that.The image of R2-D2 doesn't look terrible and if you have other acrylic plastic pieces, you can easily swap them out. It's an okay gift for a kid.

I snagged a few of these, each one's base is a little different as to where the power cable goes, likely a patent workaround I'd imagine. Either way thought, you can see that as a benefit or an annoyance, personally I just set them to the corresponding sides of my desk, the plates would seem to be all inter changeable so you can still arrange the important bits the way you want hassle free, just mind the thumb prints. Color/light output is great, nice relatively smooth fade between colors or static. There is no brightness setting and the single button control can be sort of a pain to cycle through but honestly, the things that come with a tiny remote are almost more annoying to deal with for me anyway. All in all Good stuff, now to find one that's an X-wing!

I got this as a gift for a friend and he LOVES IT!!! The only part that was annoying was getting the sticky protective sheet off of the plastic piece but that’s my only complaint!! It is bright, a little smaller than expected but not by much. I would highly recommend this!!!
