Great read!
My daughter was assigned Maya Angelou for Black History Month. This biography was perfect for my little reader to learn more about this literary icon. It even addressed some of the more tragic moments in Ms. Angelou's life, but in a very age-appropriate way.

Wonderful book! Meant for ages 8-10 but can be read to younger children if you "censor" a bit.
I love this series! This is the first I have bought in the "who was.." series, but I am buying more. I read this book to my 5 year old daughter at bedtime, a few pages at a time, and she was captivated. We just finished it and now she is eager to read about Frida Kahlo. These books are really focused towards age 8-10, and there was some content that I chose to skip over because my 5 yo is not mature enough for it yet. But I was able to read her most of the book. We will keep it of course, and when she is older she can read the whole thing. I wanted to introduce her to the treasure that was Maya Angelou, and this book was wonderful. I also felt that, at her age, reading her a longer "big girl" book over the course of several weeks helps build the skill of sustaining interest in a topic.

Maya comes to life in text.
I adore these Who was... Who is... books. Maya Angelou was the topic of my daughter’s last research project. This book was perfect for her to read and gain info.

Parent Warning (Sexual Abuse of a Child Explicit in this Book)
My low rating does not reflect my deep respect for Maya Angelou as a leader or her brilliance as a writer. Rather, I’m deeply disappointed and shocked at the publisher for including sexually explicit child abuse in a series meant for young kids. After reading 15 of these books, I concluded that the publisher made a point of telling true life stories, but also of ensuring the content was age appropriate. I can highly recommend these books: Sonia Sotomayor, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, Sally Ride, Amelia Earhart, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.Yesterday, my eight-year-old daughter came to me and asked if she had to keep reading this book because of an upsetting scene in which young Maya is inappropriately touched, the man goes to jail, gets out and dies, and then she doesn’t speak for five years. This is intense, true, and I think it’s important to tell the truth- but not in this way in a book written for young kids. Not without a parent warning. I had an important conversation about appropriate and inappropriate touch with my daughter as a result (a continuation of earlier conversations).I would have liked a warning. So here is yours before you buy this book!
