like flies, buzz home to death
Impossible to discuss LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL without first saying a few words about GENIUS, the recent Michael Grandage film that chronicles the stormy relationship between "the incredible Thomas Wolfe" and Maxwell Perkins, his first publisher.Perkins had received from Wolfe a thousand page manuscript that was proof (a) that the writer had not the faintest idea on how to structure a novel, and (b) that he was indeed a genius with limitless ambition. Ambition to transcend time: "Each moment is the fruit of forty thousand years. The minute-winning days, like flies, buzz home to death, and every moment is a window on all time". And ambition to know each and every man on earth: "Which of us has known his brother? Which of us has looked into his father's heart? Which of us has not remained forever prison-pent? Which of us is not forever a stranger and alone?"In LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL, Wolfe partly succeeds. But the book would probably be more successful if Perkins had persuaded his protege to cut another hundred pages. It would then reach the status of his contemporaries Fitzgerald and Hemingway. But read at least the first chapters, then the chapters on the death of the protagonist's brother, and make absolutely sure to read the last ten pages, that will help you make sense of the title, and may strike you, as they did for me, as among the most beautiful poetry ever written.

Thomas Wolf is Thomas Wolf
If you enjoyed "You can't go home again" you will enjoy "Look Homeward Angel".

A great American novel--maybe the best America novel. But there are traces of another writer.
This is probably the best novel by Wolfe. HOWEVER, there are passages--specifically, Chapter 14--that were not written by Wolfe, or at least do not sound like him. These passages may have been written or co-written by Max Perkins, Wolfe's editor.

Look Homeward, Angel
I have wanted to read this book for years and finally bought it. The use of language is amazing and descriptive. You are drawn into the story straightaway and I found it very hard to put down. To any lover of good literature who has not yet read Thomas Wolfe's book I would say "do it now"!

North Castilian
I first read this book in 1976 and really enjoyed it. I was living in North Carolina at the time. My daughter now lives in Florida and is interested in visiting N.C. so I bought the book for her. I know she will like it as much as I did
