Haven't used my water filter in years so I thougt it best to get a new filter. It fit perfectly and and worked ad advertised.

They included an easily installed, washable, optional pre-filter to lengthen life of the main cylinder filter. When I have done my own pre-filtering at the intake (e.g. coffee filter) I regularly exceeded the 200 gallon rating by LOTS so the new layer that you may wrap around the main filter will so the same, only easier. After trips, I flush the filter and pump with mild bleach solution, and air dry before packing even further extending the life of these outstanding filters! These are also an excellent addition to my in-home disaster kit that I keep on hand. Great value, safe, healthy, great tasting water!

So glad Katadyn bought-out Pur! Hasn't changed in decades, except in names. For its size, it really does a fantastic job.

Exactly what I needed

What you get in the box - Filter, filter screen, mesh, sponge and silicone. I originally purchased the Katadyn Hiker model so mine did not come with the screen, mesh and sponge. I go out camping/backpacking for a night or two nights max so this model is fine for me. Just a note, after you get back from your backwoods adventure make sure you take the filter out and let it dry. I didn't do this after my first trip out with the HIKER so when I checked it a couple of months later while gearing up for a weekend out I had moldy spots on the filter. NOT COOL but my fault completely. Anyhoo I like it, it does the job but agree with everyone else. The filter should be cheaper considering the amount of water it filters or it should filter more for the same price.

These filters are the perfect replacement unit for your compatible Katadyn filter system! I own the Hiker Pro and these fit and functioned perfectly with my system. The filter is OEM and has the right threading, gaskets, and flow system to breathe new life into your system. I replaced an aging filter and was surprised at how quickly and easily I could filter water with this new filter....should have replaced it a long time ago! The filter comes with a new filter protector and flexible netting which you need to install; very simple and the included instructions walk you through this easy process. The item also includes a sponge (used for periodically cleaning/wiping the filter protector; after installing the filter protector you'll know how to remove it for cleaning). You can get extra life out of these filters by cleaning the filter protector, protective sleeve, and swishing the filter through clean water vigorously. The major downside of these filters are that they are very expensive! However, ease of use and the compactness of the system make the Hiker Pro and these replacement filters worth the cost. I've been using the unit for these cartridges for nearly 15 years & won't go on a wilderness trip without one. Everyone who tries it says the same thing, it tastes great & there is no odor. No one has ever gotten sick drinking the lake water filtered through this. The cartridge is made out of ceramic so when it gets plugged up you just need to bleach it & air dry it before next use. I've only replaced it once in 10 years so if you maintain them they last a very long time. The number of gallons per use is an average (around 200) but if you are in dirtier water conditions then you'll need to clean it more often. We paddle out from our campsite away from the shore to pump water and it doesn't get fouled up nearly as fast in the cleaner deeper water. But if you can only pump from shore it still works great you'll just need to clean it sooner. We go through 10-15 gallons every trip & I only bleach it every 3 years or so. It is a good idea to remove it & air dry thoroughly before you store it for a long time. I always pump at least a half gallon through it before bottling to flush it out just in case. Great company who really stands behind the product too, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Expensive but it works I have the Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter which works great. I've been on a few back pack trips with different parties and it works much better than the other pump filters I have seen others use. I've used it in Colorado and New Mexico. The Katadyn Base Camp Water Filter is a gravity system. Just fill it up with water and hang it on a tree and it does all the work for you. Only complaint, the filter only seems to work for a trip or 2. Granted the New Mexico trip was a week and it filtered some nasty looking water. But I have had the same results filtering water in Colorado where it works awesome for 4-5 days (filtering what looks like clear water), then its time for a new one. Keep in mind I was filtering water for 10 people so it was in use 2-3 times a day. Ersatzfilterelement für den Hiker pro von Katadyn incl. abwaschbares Vlies als Filterschutz. Die Kombination aus Vorfilter, Feinfilter und Aktivkohle in einem sehr kompakten leichten Filterelement finde ich sehr geschickt. Der Hiker ist weniger anfällig bei Stößen und bei Frost als Keramikfilter. Wobei ich wegen der 0,2 micron Glasfaser bislang noch keine Probleme hatte. 5 Liter Wasser sind in wenigen Minuten durchgefiltert. Der Filter wirkt wirklich: Ich hatte bereits den Fall, dass bei einer Tour die Teilnehmer gesund blieben, die nur gefiltertes Wasser tranken, die anderen die das selbe Wasser ungefiltert tranken, hatten eine Woche lang heftigen Durchfall. Das Ersatzelement ist auch für den alten Hiker geeignet und kann auch dort mit dem Vlies eingesetzt werden. Meine Wasseraufbereitung: Ich benutze je nach Situation einen Katadyn Hiker (Filter + Aktivkohle), einen Steripen (UV-Licht) oder Micropur Forte (Silberionen + Chlor). Keine Filtermaßnahme garantiert einwandfreies gesundes Wasser - reduziert nur gewisse Gefahren. - Den Hiker mit Glasfaser (0,2 micron) und Kohle bei Sedimenten oder möglichen chemischen Verunreinigungen. Der Hiker absorbiert aber z.B. nicht alle Viren sicher. Ein Keramikfilter ist kleinporiger aber bei Frostgefahr kritisch. Chemie lässt sich nur mir Aktivkohle reduzieren. - Bei Gefahr von Viren den Steripen. Hier habe ich zusätzlich den Steripen Aufsatz mit Vorfilter für die Nalgene Flasche. Der Steripen reduziert mit wenig Aufwand immer das Restrisiko bei vermeintlich sauberen Wasser. - Micropur habe ich immer im Verbandpäckchen für den Notfall dabei, verwende ich aber eher nicht für Trinkwasser, da es lange dauert und den Geschmack ändert. Verwende es zur Desinfektion des Hiker oder von Trinkgefässen. Bei Filtern ist sonst immer die Gefahr, dass Pilze und Bakterien durch den Filter durchwachsen. Mit Micropur Forte lässt sich auch eine Desinfektionslösung machen - zur Wundversorgung. Alles zusammen kostet etwa 150 € und wiegt etwa 500g, aber es reicht für eine kleine Gruppe. Außerdem muß man nicht immer alles dabei haben. Wichtig ist, wo ich mich aufhalte. In der freien Natur im Norden Skandinviens hat das Wasser meist weniger Verunreinigunen oder Chemie. Es kann aber vorkommen, dass Aas im Oberlauf von Gewässern ist. (Ich hatte bisher zwei verwesende Großtiere in Gewässern gesehen - kranke Tiere halten sich oft in der Nähe von Gewässsern auf). Mit Coliformen Keimen ist ohnehin immer zu rechnen. Zudem gibt es gelegentlich Fuchsbandwurm. Hier ist der Steripen mit dem Vorfilter ideal. Der Hiker ist meist überflüssig, da nicht mit hoher chemischer Belastung oder Sedimenten zu rechnen ist. Den Gewässerverlauf natürlich immer vom Weg weg Richtung Quelle ausreichend weit gehen. Bei fraglichen "Trinkwasser" in Reiseländern wie Indien, Ägypten, Mexiko.... auch immer Steripen. Im Winter, wenn ich zur Trinkwassergewinnung frischen Schnee schmelze, lasse ich grundsätzlich das Wasser kurz sprudelnd kochen. Man wundert sich, wass selbst bei vermeintlich frisch gefallenen Schnee danach alles herumschwimmt. Wenn irgendwie menschliche Besiedelung oder Landwirtschaft im Oberlauf ist, wo immer zusätzlich mit Dünger oder Chemie zu rechnen ist, soweit als irgendwie möglich kein Wasser nehmen. Wenn, dann immer erst mit dem Hiker filtern, dann den Steripen. Steripen und Mikropur funktioniert nämlich nur bei klaren Wasser zuverlässig - also bei Trübungen immer mit Hiker vorher filtern. Wenn Gewicht keine große Rolle spielt, wie auf dem Kanu, habe ich durchaus für mehrere Tage Wasservorrat mit dabei. Wichtig ist, einfach die Trinkwasserversorgung in die Tourplanung einzubeziehen. Hier auch die Karte zu Rate ziehen. Man kann durchaus mit Faltkanister relativ sicheres Quellwasser die letzten paar hundert Meter zum Camp am stillen See tragen.
