โAnd beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, [Jesus] interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.โ (Luke 24:27) After the resurrection, when Jesus used Scripture to explain who he was and why he came, where did he start? In the Old Testament. And this is where The Promised One begins to look for Christ, finding him in the people, promises, and patterns of the Old Testament scriptures. With contagious passion and theological soundness, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie shows how the book of Genesis points us to the person of Christ. Throughout ten weeks of guided personal study, relevant teaching, and thoughtful discussion questions, The Promised One will help you: make new discoveries of Jesus as seen in the shadows of the Old Testament; apply the gospel found in Genesis to issues such as shame, fear, and the desire for security and significance; develop your longing for what is ahead when the world is once again made new. Gain a fresh perspective on the book of Genesis, a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture, and much more, when you join with Nancy on this incredible journey to see Jesus in the Old Testament! Part of the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series. *A leaderโs guide is available as a free download at SeeingJesusInTheOldTestament.com and a supplemental DVD of Nancyโs teaching is also available for purchase. Wonderful Bible study series!
I participated in a larger group study of book 2 in this series several years back at a church I was visiting while out of town for a while. I was very impressed with the series so when my small house church was recently looking for a new weekly Bible study, I suggested we work our way through this series. We love this series. It is not for the faint of heart. You must put in the time and effort if you are to be successful which I think is something that many Christ followers today lack. Why? So many Bible studies today have people with their eyes turned inward, looking at their selves...me! me! me!...instead of upon the One who is able to save. Scripture teaches us that perserverance is vitally important to our faith. Yeshua (Jesus) shows us this by example, the epistles reminds us of this fact which I believe is best summed up by the author of Hebrews at 12:1-2. In order to do this, we must be able to see our Messiah for who He truly is, both Alpha and Omega...ever present. The One the Apostle John spoke of in the first chapter of his gospel account when he said, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim. He was in the beginning with Elohim. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." (1-5). Those five verses alone should provide everyone who reads them with no rational justification for why they do not immediate set off for Bereshith...."In the beginning"...to seek Him out. Bereshith, by the way, is the Hebrew transliteration for the word Genesis, but it literally means "in the beginning." I was introduced to Nancy Gunthrie's work after many years of indepth studying of Yeshua in the Old Testament and I believe she has done a very good work. Thanks and praise be to Yeshua, and through the precious gift of Reach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) sent by YHWH to those who love and obey Yeshua, I have seen Yeshua in the Old Testament since YHWH blessed me with the gift of grace to believe and I was obedient in reading the Word. Finding Yeshua in the Old Testament was life changing for me. And I mean that in the truest sense of the word. So, for many years I have read the Old Testament with this understanding of Yeshua being infused in it. His very name , Yeshua, means salvation in Hebrew. However, I have never taken the time to go from Genesis through the prophets to systematically read it as Nancy Gunthrie lays it out in her study guides. I have read all the stories. I've even written many blogs about Yeshua and the tribes of Israel. One of the nice things about these study books is that they can be used by those who are fairly new to the Christian faith. Each chapter begins with a study section. You have to read passages and answer questions related to the passage. I feel that most of those questions can be answered by those who are relatively young in the faith. That is, one need not be a Bible scholar to answer the questions. However, with that said, it may seem like a lot of work to those who aren't used to indepth studies. Our small group does the first section on our own then we go over our answers together before we read the teaching section together. For a newbie group of Christians, it might be best to do each section together in the group. Of course this will stretch out getting through the book to 20 weeks instead of 10; however, we doing do things as if we are in a race to win the approval of others but to please Elohim. If I have any issue with Nancy Gunthrie's writing, it is this: I believe she lacks wisdom when it comes to Ruach HaKodesh. I say this because there are times when she says it is Yeshua in the Old Testament when Scripture is clearly making a reference to Ruach HaKodesh. She rarely speaks of Ruach HaKodesh even when the occasion gives rise for her to do so.. I know this study is about Yeshua; however, Scripture teaches us that Yeshua sends Ruach HaKodesh to be our teacher. Ruach HaKodesh was in the beginning as well and knows all truths and teaches us all truths about the Father and the Son. We must worship Elohim in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24). Why? According to John 4:24, because Elohim is Ruach (Spirit) We cannot do this without knowing the fullness of LeElohim. LeElohim is the transliteration form of the Hebrew name Which God called Himself when He said to Moses, "I am the Lord their God." (Exodus 29:46). It means "their God" but it is the same word used in Hebrew for "my God" and it is not singular in form but plural (Elohim not El) because it expresses the fullness of God...YHWH, Yeshua and Ruach HaKodesh. And anyone who knows the Scripture knows that we are not saved merely by Jesus but by YHWH, Yeshua and Ruach HaKodesh. Just as They were all there in the beginning creating the universe, looking upon it, and saying it was good, They restore us back to a right relationship with THEM...LeElohim...our God...and as Revelation 7 points out, some day, we will stand before the throne and declare that salvation belongs to Them. Ask yourself, does any one singled out part of the godhead get you there? Truly, the answer is no! Yeshua said if you have seen me, you have seen the Father (John 14;:9); however, He also said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit [Ruach], He cannot enter the kingdom of God." (John 3:5) It could be that Mrs. Gunthrie's lack of discussion and misrepresentation of Ruach HaKodesh at times could be due to her theological education and/or upbringing. Many people struggle when it comes to this topic and I don't want anyone to think I believe it should keep them from using her books as a study guide regarding learning about Yeshua in the Old Testament. She writes very well as she guides readers from a place of thinking about faith in a self serving way into thinking of it as a well spring where we go to grow and serve LeElohim who loves us and truly desires a relationship with us. It is obvious to me that even if her theological background twarts her ability to speak about Ruach HaKodesh, she has been blessed by Ruach HaKodesh with spiritual gifts which she shares graciously with us in her books, and this is what matters when engaging in these studies. It is LeElohim we look to and not the one He chooses to speak through. Because when we really know LeElohim, we know what a powerful God we serve, and studying Yeshua through the Old Testament will give all who choose to do so a new bird's eye view of just how truly amazing and powerful LeElohim is. What a mighty Elohim we serve!

Excellent in-depth Bible Study
Nancy Guthrie's study clearly connects Jesus to all aspects of Genesis. The amazing parallels with the OT characters and their foreshadowing of the Promised One, Jesus Christ, create a picture of God's story. We used this book for a 23-week Bible Study and we were never short of insights and discussion materials. I have been teaching Bible classes for the past six years, and this book is by far the best we have used. Our plan is to teach her book on Exodus in the fall.

This is a wonderful bible study
This is a wonderful bible study. Many women's bible studies are topical based on a women's issue or often men's and women's studies focus on application what the scripture means to me. Also many studies will jump around picking and choosing verses. This study does not do that at all. This study does just what the title says. It covers a section in a certain book of the Old testiment and has the reader dig deep into God's words. She does a great job pointing out how all scripture points to Christ and she teaches is how to find that ourselves instead of spoon feeding us. The questions asked are challenging and the answers are found in the passages just read. Also when she does jump to other scriptures they are often New Testiment ones that go right along with the Old Testiment passage that we are reading. We never have to worry that we will get a moralist message or a waterdown gospel. The sins of the Old testiment characters are made known, God's holiness is shown and Christ as the only hope is made known. The set up is you read the verses and or chapters, then answer questions at home and then go in meet with a group to watch the video and answer more group question out loud as a group. The only negative is the book has a section that you are to read after answering the questions, but the video is just about word for word of that. So I won't be reading and listening to the same thing I just skip the reading part. If your women do not have 2 hours to do this study I would say don't watch the video just stick with discussing the questions you did at home and the group questions.

A great study guide for seeing Jesus in Genesis.
This book helped me to learn more about the book of Genesis and how to see Jesus in every story. The study guide and interaction with other Bible study participants helped me to learn more than I thought I would. The author has helped me to look at a book of the Bible I have read many times and see its timeless truths in new and refreshing ways that are relevant to my life. For that I am grateful!

Nancy Guthrie has an amazing gift
I was led to this book by a gal who appreciated Francine Rivers (Christian fiction: Mark of The Lion) as much as I do. I did not know what to expect but my Bible Study group had read several books/studies and we needed a new one. We are now almost done with this first volume and it has blown me away. Nancy Guthrie has an amazing gift, and she IS a gift for writing this study. The women in my study are all different Christian denominations, all have strong faith, and have studied together for several years. The last study we did was on the entire book of Genesis and thought that we had it all figured out.....until we read this! Nancy has revealed so much more to us than we were prepared for, and it has been such an awesome surprise. She sticks to scripture, and goes deep into the layers to reveal things that are often overlooked / you may have otherwise missed! Her "Teaching Chapters" inside each chapter are gold! We are definitely moving to Volume II next.
