can this be used with just paint ?

Depends on the outcome you're looking for. If you are an abstract artist then these rollers could provide an amazing look. These rollers are designed for a thick cementitious surface so as to simulate the look and feel of tree bark. I haven't yet used them for the tree that I want to do but now I am going to try them out as a patterned paint project. Sometimes a tool has many uses.

will these work for drywall texturing?

Yes, as long as your mud is about 1/2" in thickness. I have used other texture rollers to create some awesome stone and wood finishes using Dura bond 45 or 90. If you add fine sand, you can achieve the needed thickness without cracking...similar to using masonry mud. The thing about these rollers is that they are meant to simulate bark, so you will need for your mud to be thick. I highly recommend contacting Something Better Corporation as they have courses that will teach you quite a bit about types of mud, thicknesses and some amazing textures that you can create using texture rollers.

Are these solid rubber or foam?

Good Evening, all of our texture tools are made of Polyurethane, no foam is used in manufacturing any of our products.
