Death in Paradise: Season Nine [DVD]

Great Series, Weak Season
I love "Death in Paradise." Great locations. Interesting murders and characters. This season was a bit of a let down with the lead characters. O'Hanlan (DI Mooney) wanted out and was leaving, and it showed. Little enthusiasm for his role. Pretty much phoned in the part for the first four episodes. The second part of the season introduced us to a new lead, DI Parker (Ralf Little). Though I didn't have a problem with his role as a detective, I thought the never ending emphasis on his character's allergies and related medical issues irritating at best and seriously detracted from the character's role. The crimes themselves and the supporting characters did a great job as usual. Looking forward to Season 10. Hopefully there will be a little better and different character development for DI Parker.

Fun viewing, like revisiting old friends
I've seen every season of Death in Paradise on DVD. I binge-watched Seasons 1-6 and then have waited patiently for the next series DVD to come out once a year since then. I really enjoy watching fun, escapist episodes set in a warm Caribbean setting, especially as when I watch them I can look out my window at many inches of snow and see the thermometer at negative degrees. It takes me some time to warm to new characters, but I always do. So I'm sorry to see Ardal O'Hanlon (D.I. Mooney) move on. Ralf Little (D. I. Parker) has quirks that mark him as different from every previous D. I . character, and my personal jury is still out if these quirks will remain annoying or will evolve into charming. He's only been given four episodes so far, so I'm willing to give him more time and the benefit of the doubt, but it'd be nice to see him without his backpack once in awhile. I adore the junior officer characters, in particular Ruby, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Commissioner Patterson have more to do this season. The mysteries are, as usual, "impossible", and I have to admit I am getting quite frustrated with the writers' use of the same solution to many of the mysteries. I won't say what it is to avoid spoilers for new viewers, but the identification of the guilty party is the same in perhaps half the episodes of the last several seasons. It's a clever solution once in a while, but to have the same answer in back-to-back episodes is sloppy. It's gotten to the point where I say "well, it's impossible for it to be any of them, so the murderer is ... " and I'm usually correct. I like to be surprised, so that takes some of the fun away for me.I'd still buy the series and I will wait a year for Series Ten, buying my pre-order as usual. I enjoy the relationships between the police department. I wish Catherine had more to do; she's a fun character, and since her daughter left, she hasn't had much to do other than serve drinks.Series Nine is recommended!

Needs a Renewal
I have watched all nine seasons. One of our favorite shows. However, both the cast and the plots are not up to the levels of prior seasons. Still a fun show, but I do seem to believe that some of the episodes are virtual repeats of prior episodes. Hopefully season 10 will be better.

Great Show, But New Inspector a Clone
I've loved this program from the first, even with the changes in all the major cast members! But this last Inspector feels a bit like a clone of DI Richard Poole, even squinting up at the sun when he arrives in St. Marie. I'm still a fan and will continue to watch since it's a great show..

Series slowing down...
Series Nine of Death In Paradise features okay plots, but the actors seem to be stilted and perhaps tired of playing their parts. Their lines are so expected and, at times, mumbled. We want to reach into the tv set and give them a good shake! Wake up! No where near as good as previous seasons.

Delicious Death
Like I have said, I love Who Dunit's, and this one is great. I have watched all and even though I loved Humphrey best, I still like all the other character that have been and perhaps will be in these great and fun mysteries. I want to go to this "counterfeit Island", I know that is it an island but not as it is portrayed, but I sure would love it. I love mysteries and British or Europe mysteries are the best, I fell in love with the Books of Agatha Christie and it was good mysteries from that point forward, and this one is great. Thanks, Susan Cahill

Pleasant Show after 9 seasons
I've loved this show since the first episode and cant wait for the dvd sets to be released. I wish they'd speed that process up. The episodes were on a year ago and only recently released on disc.Sure the crimes can be predictable, but its a good show to just sit and relax and enjoy the scenery, and try and figure out who did it.

As Good As They Come!
We love the Death in Paradise series and Season Nine is no exception. Those that have watched the series, knows they continue to have new main characters which helps to keep it interesting. Once again, Season Nine surprised us with a new DI Neville Parker. He is a great detective but is not fit for living in the Caribbean which helps create some fun in each episode. My understanding is the new DI has agreed to be in the series for the next two years!

Typical Death in Paradise
If you like this series, this latest offering will be enjoyable. The scenery is spectactular especially if you live in northern climes. The characters are engaging and the plots predictable but it is an enjoyable hour. Highly recommend.

series is slipping
I have all the previous 8 series and thoroughly enjoyed them all. However, I find it very difficult to warm to the new guy. Perhaps he is supposed to be funny in a fish our of water way but I just found him really irritating. I doubt that I will purchase a series 10.I still think that Kris Marshall was the best one!!
