Fairly lightweight
This shelf unit assembles by inserting stud rivets into slotted holes in the vertical uprights. Fairly straightforward except the studs do not fit tightly into the holes and continually fall out during construction until the particleboard shelf is place in position. They are held down by gravity. The 4 corner uprights are shipped as 8 pieces. They are held together by butting the upper with the lower and inserting the bottom stud of the shelf horizontal strut in to the top hole of the lower vertical and the top stud into the upper vertical. They do not overlap for additional strength at this butt joint. This is a two person job or a lot of vicegrips! This shelf is definitely not for use as a freestanding unit. Even when fully assembled it is wobbly. I used 4 lag bolts and secured to the the wall studs in my garage. The particleboard shelves are key to getting any kind of stability. If you removed the shelves I believe the structural unit would collapse into its' self. Particleboard tends to turn into damp sawdust when it gets wet so I would not advise using this shelving where it could get wet. The vertical uprights and horizontal shelf struts are made of 16 gauge painted steel. 16 gauge steel is approximately 0.06" thick. if you stack 16 sheets of 16 gauge material you would have a thickness of about one inch so the steel is about 1/16 of an inch thick. Point is that the steel is very light weight. The manufacturer claims a 5000 lbs load. Even with the shelf bolted to the wall studs I would be concerned about loading it over 1000 lbs. If you need a heavy duty freestanding shelf unit I would not recommend this product. Rather you need to look at the Gladiator shelving. I have two of those units and they are really heavy duty with an 8000 lbs load rating. I would have no problem loading them to that limit and free standing them.

I've seen a lot of bad reviews filled with incorrect information about this product
I've seen a lot of bad reviews filled with incorrect information about this product. I own three of these units. Is it sturdy? Yes, if it is assembled CORRECTLY AND COMPLETELY. There are some photos in other reviews that show the shelves half assembled and imply that they are not strong. These are very misleading. ALL PARTS must be installed correctly. (On one unit I received was missing a part and the manufacturer shipped it to me quickly.)Will they hold 5000 lbs as advertised? Who knows but they are very strong. Stronger than other shelf units I have purchased. The shelves themselves are fiber board. One review mentioned that they bowed under weight. I have placed some heavy dishes and bowling balls on them and have not noted any bowing. Again if they are installed correctly, the shelf is supported all the way around the perimeter by a metal bracket. Are they easy to assemble? Yes if you are handy and understand the mechanical principles involved (disclaimer I am an engineer). It helps to have two people at some points but I have done all mine alone. The metal frames and the fiber board shelves are quite heavy so there is the potential for damage in shipping. The box is so heavy that the people that deliver it to my house appear to drag it from the truck to my gate where they leave it. In all cases the boxes have been damaged but the shelves were fine.In summary if you are good at assembling this type of thing and you want to store reasonably heavy stuff on a sturdy shelf, this is a good product.

Poster child for borderline Value Engineering. You get what you pay for.
First, the shipping box needs to be upgraded. Mine arrived with one end punched open by the internal parts movement during shipping/handling somewhere. The other end was weakened in the same manner. The box ends are too thin for shipping. One of the short shelf supports had fallen out somewhere along the way, so I'm missing a part. The metal parts had finish worn down ro bare metal in some places. My boxing had poly banding around the length that seemed to work well. At the least I would recommend at least two lengthwise bands before the shorter bands are put along the length of the package.Second, the materials are thin. Thin MDF boards. Thin, easily bent or easily deformed metal braces. No cross supports other than the edge supports. The weight rating may hold up with evenly distribued loads like horizontal sacks of dog food. It is NOT for heavy, small footprint loads. The assembly is not stable enough for freestanding; this ESPECIALLYIMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN AROUND. The box was boldy emblazoned with a "Muscle Rack" label all over. Yeah, no. More like Caspar Milquetoast. The "Ultra Rack" probably refers to Ulta low value engineering.Third, easily aggravated people will probably aneurysm during assembly. Assembly is best accomplished with two people minimum. A single person can assemble if they're a bit clever. I found it amusing they included a hot pink flyer inside stating something to the effect of 'don't send it back, call us first, we can help you over the phone'.In the end... I have my stuff off the floor and not stacked on top of each other. I mistakenly thought these would be at least similar in materials to my existing Edsal braced/adjustable clip shelving. When I move this thing is going in the trash.
