Love it
I love it!! Even though this is BIG for my cat, but he was able to lying there comfortably, you have the option to wear it as a backpack or roll it as a suitcase. Light weight and seems pretty durable.

suites our needs
I have a 15 lbs Shih Tzu who had Back surgery about 2 months ago, with all of our Dr. appointments and therapy appointments whe had been going to i figured this was a a good option for us rather than useing the wire kennel in the back of the van. I liked it right away because at first he couldn't walk well and would slide around on the floors so we could roll him into the clinic if there was a long waite period he would get heavy to hold. As he got better it's just nice that i can use this carrier as a carseat in the seat of the van and he can then see me (he is much happier this way).As far as room there is plenty of room for him to lay down or sit up in the carrier. He seems fine with it, as i have even cought him trying to crawl into it to nap.I don't think i would use it as a backpack though, since he would get bounced around.. But as a rolling carrier, or carseat it works wonderful. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the backpack handles do tend to get in the way of rolling, i used a zip tie to tie them together and keep them up out of the way.

Quality
I ordered a different cat/dog carrier that was inferiorly made, so I went back to Pet-Gear and I am so happy that I did. I returned the other carrier to the Vendor.

Worked great!
I bought this carrier to bring my 14 pound Pomeranian on vacation with me. She is also proportionally taller than the breed standard Pomeranian. It was perfect! It was well made and sturdy and I feel it was really worth the money. It was actually a little big for my dog height wise and a bit bulky when used as a backpack, however, I wanted to use it as a car seat for a long drive and wanted to make sure it was big enough for her to be comfortable. As a carseat it was excellent. I purchased a nice thick sherpa liner and folded it to put in the bottom to make it more comfortable as the bottom is hard and that worked great. My girl was able to curl up to sleep in the car seat or stretch out and lay her head on the edge of the zippered bottom or she could sit up and look out the window. She seemed to like the seat and was very comfortable. While shopping in stores I zipped her in and used it as a back pack. She had plenty of head room and I didn't feel that I was cramming her into anything and nobody gave me any problems for having a dog in the store. As I said, it is a little bulky and I probably could have fit her in the smaller version, however, I feel I would have been cramming her in and felt better that she was comfortable in the bigger version. I also used it as a pull cart at times between stores and it seemed to work very well. I was very, very happy with the backpack and look forward to many more vacations using this.

This is everything but a backpack
I purchased this so that i can carry my small dogs during a hike after they had pooped out. They usually give up at about mile 5 and they just sit in the carrier for the rest of the hike. This is gets 3 stars because it is a terrible design for a backpack. it doesn't distribute the weight correctly. This could be a better product if there was a belt that strapped to your torso and put the weight on there like a backpacking backpack. The way it is build the load is on your shoulders and after a few miles you will not be happy. Don't use this as a backpack you will hurt yourself. Now as a carrier/roller for pets if you are going through a lot of foot traffic this is the best ever! your pets stay safe and there will be no interaction between the general public and your pets. As long as it isn't a bumpy road your pets will do fine. I have found that this is even better in a car. Your pets are safe and secure in their carrier. They don't have the ability to jump on your lap when you are driving. it is a safe solution for everyone in that situation. i have been contemplating returning this just because i hike a lot but can't use the backpack function but the other uses out weigh the one huge flaw in the carrier.

Perfect solution for a non-tiny dog
Our dog is roughly the size of a cocker spaniel, and fit very nicely into this carrier. The wheels and retractable handle make it far easier to bring our pet on train trips. We have not attempted to use it on an airplane; as we have the XL version, I'm pretty sure it exceeds the limits for airline travel. It does come with shoulder straps to use as a backpack, and a long over-the-shoulder strap, which would be helpful in traversing stairs or very bumpy terrain for short periods of time, but it would be very uncomfortable with a larger dog such as ours for any length of time. You may find that train staff will give it a second look - as in the "upright" position it's far taller than Amtrak's guidelines. The XL version technically exceeds Amtrak dimensions (19" long x 14" wide x 10.5" high), but nobody has ever tried to measure it. When one employee did question it, we showed that we could lay it on its side, and it looked close enough that the employee didn't push the issue. I don't think it would fit under a seat; you could probably put it in the overhead carrier with a little help but I'm sure your pet would not appreciate it.There are outside AND interior pockets, which are useful in stashing small necessities.
