I have a Catalina 30 docked in an ocean harbor and the ease of use and durability of Cetol Marine is a prime factor in my giving it 5 stars. There are several schools of thought when it comes to marine varnish and 20 yrs ago, I evaluated them all and went with this very product. I like the tint it adds to teak, makes it a striking dark amber color which also serves to hide any blemishes or minor gray grain. I find it important to remove all of the old varnish using a paint scraper and heat gun if necessary. I sand down from 80 to 150 to 220, then clean the surface and put on 3 coats as instructed on the can. Smart sailors will lightly recoat annually or as needed. I wasn't that smart before, however, with this application, I promise never to have to completely sand down all the brightwork again. Smarter and happy makes a Sailor's day go better. Thank you Sikkens. Review: Great for Intended Uses - I didn't get the color I ordered but it was close enough so I didn't complain. Product works very well. I used this on a pair of teak rocking chairs that I was having to refinish every year or so. Even after acid washing and sanding, there were plenty of gray areas that looked bad. The colorant in the Cetol (technically makes this a glaze) effectively covered these bad spots and the results were impressive. After a year, I see no visible degradation and it looks great. It was very easy to apply and achieve great results -- can't be said of many finishes. I recommend letting it dry for a least a week before heavy use. I initially didn't like the glossy finish and was going to cover it with a satin marine varnish but the glossy finish grew on me. However I do not think you can put it on and forget it. I believe the salt should be rinsed off regularly and railing dried if possible. The combination of sun and salt water build up will degrade the finish quickly. Also regular timely refinishing as noted in the product data is required. (Light sanding and re coating) I also use it on a Cyprus railing a few blocks from the beach and it is holding up well **Q: Is this product gloss or satin?** A: best described as somewhere between a gloss and satin. It is not a full gloss sheen. Also remember that if your substrate is exposed to a significant amount of U.V. the sheen will fade fairly quickly. This is how the product works.
