Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses, Second Edition

I grew up in a spanish-speaking home and even lived in Mexico for a year when I was a child. These experiences gave me a solid foundation for SPEAKING spanish, which is where many people struggle. However, I never had to study spanish on an academic level when I was in school. Now that I am an adult and understand the remarkable blessing of having spanish in my background, I wanted to become genuinely fluent. Reading, writing, speaking and listening. I've used 2 outstanding products to build my academic foundation: Speak in a Week - Spanish Speak in a Week!: See, Hear, Say & Learn Spanish: 4 week Set (Spanish Edition) which is FAR AND AWAY THE SINGLE BEST SPANISH RESOURSE EVER CREATED. This is where I refer everyone wanting to taste spanish for the first time. Great for beginners. Secondly, though it took me almost 2 years to get through it, I credit Spanish Made Simple for building a solid and more comprehensive foundation for my spanish. Spanish Made Simple: Revised and Updated (Please remember that I study spanish for fun on the side - I have a life, a job, and a family) This resource is great if you have access to a friend/family member who is fluent in spanish. It's great and I've gone through every single page. However, I now wanted to zero in on the nitty-gritty of the details in spanish. I'd read reviews of many products and decided to try both Spanish Verb Tenses and Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions. Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions, Second Edition BOTH ARE FANTASTIC! They are NOT for beginners as they assume a solid vocabulary. Both books are very concise and give brief (and humorous) instruction of grammatical concepts. Mostly, they are DRILLS. They are for focused practice which is exactly what I wanted. Learning spanish is a skill. Like any other skill, it requires PRACTICE. Lots and lots of practice. There is no easy way to learn spanish. I have chosen to learn it comprehensively: I literally copy my spanish resources by hand, page by page, to reinforce vocabulary and spelling. I literally conjugate out in writing every new verb I learn. But after a while...the magic shows up. You will have practiced enough and been diligent enough... that you really WILL become knowledgeable (and someday fluent) in spanish. These drill books are just another tool to help you get there. If you really do the work, your spanish will go through the roof!! Buena suerte!

This book is far better than most other Spanish grammar books I have used. The content sequencing is logical and clear. The explanation is concise. In addition (very important to me) is the formatting of the content: This book nailed it. The key vocabulary and grammar points are formatted in nice tables for easy reading. (Many other grammar books do NOT get this right and make it very confusing for the student.) Then, above all, the best feature for me is the recorded answer keys to the exercises, which give me that much more of an opportunity to hear Spanish spoken by native speakers. There are a couple things that can be improved: 1. The recorded answer keys do NOT match the text 100%. There are discrepancies. This tells me that this book needs better editing. 2. The recorded Spanish player does not offer any transport control (i.e. you cannot skip to just the right place. You must rewind to the beginning each time if you want to hear any specific parts of the answer keys again.) I am still giving this book a 5 star because for $8, it is an incredible value. I will be willing to pay double that, if the author would provide #2 above. It will make this book much more useful for the student. Note to potential buyer: This book is NOT in and of itself a text book. It's great to be used in conjunction with other Spanish course books, not by itself.

This book is great, I started learning Spanish two months ago as a complete beginner, I purchased this book along with Basic Spanish and Pronouns and Prepositions. I went through Basic Spanish in 2 weeks and then delved into verb tenses. I have to say I love these exercises, it is really interesting and encourage you to continue without making you feel bored. I finished this book today with 1.5 month of daily effort. English is not my first Language so I know how boring learning grammar could have been. I wasted so many times before trying to understand these English verb tenses. But when using this book, everything is just naturally falling into its category with the great explanation and exercise provided by the author(of course, some of them is quite similar to english, so it saved my time) I'm not go for a grammar expert in spanish, so a clear explanation of the commonly seen verb structures like "se puede" is my expectation. Right now, I think Spanish Verb Tenses did a fantastic job Only suggestion for this book, I wish there's review sections and exercises in the book covering different chapters, because the exercise under its own chapter title makes me little bit lazy to think about the tense deeper, I just have to use the one indicated by the chapter title. (Another thing I'd like to mention is that the conjugation of Spanish verb is much more complex than English since it's directly from Latin, while English is not. So at first you might be little bit scared, but believe me, it is really nothing. People are not very interested in memorization these days, but if you've made up your mind to get started with these verb tenses, you can memorize of all them in a few days, firmly, and refresh it again and again in the coming days with the exercises in the book, after that, your memorization understanding will become real understanding) Update: another suggestion for this book is about imperative. In this book, imperative is introduced before the the subjunctive, so when I used this book for imperative, I just felt that all these formation rules of imperative are just so random that I totally can not categorize them. Later someone tell me that all imperatives are just the corresponding present subjunctive except for the affirmative of tú and vosotros, So I think it might be a good thing to introduce present subjunctive before introducing imperative Update Sept 30 It has been 6 months since I started learning Spanish, and right now I can say this book is enough for you to get a good sense of this language, to be honest, you don't need to buy any other books(maybe the pronouns and prepositions, but I found the only thing that is critically important is the RID pronouns). But you have to learn some real Spanish, the Spanish which you can not learn from any text book or work book, as for the grammar, you're already prepared after you finished this one. Practise your knowledge learnt from this book in real Spanish conversations, until turning them into your second nature 4.5/5 Highly recommended

If you are like myself, finding that you have reached a point in your Spanish learning that you need to go back for some intense review, this is a great place to start. I bought this book in order to review for my Spanish proficiency orals next semester at college. Since buying this book, I have began purchasing the entire series because this book helped me so much. I am a Spanish Education major and at the college I attend, I am finally getting into advanced courses where it begins to become extremely easy to confuse simple things, particular verb tenses since there are somewhere around a dozen with hundreds of irregulars. This book provides through explanations on not only verb tenses but particular main verbs. There is a whole section dedicated to Ser vs. Estar, and as a higher level Spanish student, this is one of the topics I see students struggle in. In fact, I even struggled with it, but not no more because this book is that clear. It took a whole 15 minutes for me to master this one topic I find myself struggling with for perhaps my last 5 or 6 Spanish courses. It also has other hard topics such as preterite vs. imperfect, once again one of the hardest concepts for non-native speakers like myself to master. I can say with some confidence that if I pass my Spanish boards this semester, it is going to be because of the practice makes perfect series, not my Spanish linguistics or advanced writing courses. This book is the best review I have ever seen, and I hope to one day use this in my Spanish Classrooms when I begin teaching. It should be a teaching tool, not just a review tool because the explanations are just that great.

Over 14 years ago, I began learning Spanish and had to teach myself the language. I went through a ridiculous amount of "text books" and was left confused and frustrated. Then, I picked up this one. With this book, the complex concepts of other text books were made to be simple with its down-to-earth, step-by-step style. And, if I wanted to check my work, I could just look at the answers in the back. In addition to teaching the verb tenses (the place every language learner should start), it builds your vocabulary little by little. Before you know it and without memorizing lists of words, you have gained a working understanding of how to use Spanish vocabulary and can use verbs to construct complete sentences. I am now a Spanish interpreter, translator, teacher and tutor and I don't let my students use any other "text book." I want learning Spanish to be a fun accomplishment. For this reason, no other text is allowed in my sessions except for those included in the Practice Makes Perfect Series. Thank you for making language learning what it should be: an exciting and accomplishable journey!

This book is exactly what I needed to finally make progress in learning Spanish. You learn vocabulary, phrases, etc, while learning how to use each verb tense. It's the perfect learning structure. Each lesson includes instruction, then some basic practice, full sentence practice, then a paragraph that you have to translate that incorporates past lessons from the book with the present lesson. Of course, practicing what you learn from this book with a native speaker would be the best way to commit what you learn from this book to long-term memory. The only thing that I would recommend is for them to lose the "true or false" sections. Maybe a quick reading comprehension section would be a better replacement for that where we would respond in full sentences. I don't think subjective true or false questions do much to help me grow. Has anyone come across this type of book that does the reverse? I know some Spanish speakers who would benefit greatly from a Spanish book that teaches English verb tenses using this format.

I am using this and 2 other books in this "Practice makes perfect" series to study for a college spanish exam. It's supposed to be a 4th-level equivalency test--meaning it's equivalent to a 4th semester spanish course in difficulty. I already took 3 years of spanish in HS, so i figured I could buy a few workbooks and I'd be okay on the test. (I haven't taken it yet, so I have no idea how hard it's going to be, lol) anyway, I love this workbook. It seems to be at the perfect level for me to start out studying spanish again. I also love how all of the books have a label on the back about its difficulty level. This one is beginner-intermediate, which I thought would be easiest to start out with in order to work my way up to the harder ones. Anyway, I highly recommend this book and I will come back and edit this review after I take my test and find out my result! That way, i will know if it really helped me at all!

with this book and a dictionary, I was able to write business documents for work in spanish within 3 months. also it helps improve my grammar big time due to the fact that spanish conjugates on the verb itself. Even though I just started Berlitz level 3, my grammer level is above level 4. Excellent book. To add: without paying too much attention and eager to improve my spanish. I bought the same book, TWICE. With 1% hope I could return the book and got some of my money back, I called Amazon up. To my surprise, Amazon's service is really amazing! Even though it's completely my fault, they gave me full refund AND let me keep the book for FREE! 5-star service. That's why I keep coming back.

I like this book, it has a lot of exercises, lots of verbs, short explanations. However, you should know at least a little of Spanish, to use it. The structure - at first you have explanation with examples, then vocab, then true-false, then exercise on translation eng to spanish, then, sometimes questions in Spanish to answer. The last exercise is translation of short text from eng to spanish. Hope it's useful rewiew for you:)

日本語で書かれたスペイン語の入門書を一通り勉強した後で、しっかり身に着けるためには量をこなしたいとこの本を購入しました。 この本では、それぞれの動詞がどのように使われるかについて、詳しく解説されています。 serとestarの使い方の違いも解りやすく書かれていました。 （例えば、主語が存在している場所を示す時はすべてestarを使う。 一時的にそこに居る時（「私は今家に居ます。」）も、永続的にそこにある時（「パリはフランスにあります。」）も。） また、点過去と線過去についても、日本語の解説本とは違った切り口で説明されていたのが面白いと思いました。 練習問題もたっぷりあるので、必要な事柄は自然と覚えられそうです。 スペイン語初心者・初級者にオススメですが、英語力に関しては中級以上の力があった方がスムーズに学習できるでしょう。

This is an excellent book, revising most things learned at beginners level and going on to intermediate level. Regular and irregular verbs in all tenses are grouped to make learning easier. The use of all verb tenses is simply explained. It is concise and clear, with exercises to reinforce learning, providing answers in the back for corrections. A extremely useful aid to learning. I would strongly recommend this book.

スペイン語の動詞の活用が全く覚えられず、このドリルを購入。 もともと覚えるのが苦手で英語も同じことを何度もするドリルを購入して勉強したので、これが見つかってとっても嬉しかったです。最近始めましたが、面白くてやめられません！ でも、英語的なスペイン語の表現があってこれで本当にいいのか疑問もありましたが、かなり覚えられるので、後でスペイン語の先生に疑問がある表現は確認したいと思います。誤植など細かいところはツッコミどころ満載ですが、動詞の活用が覚えられるということでは大満足です。
