Make Way For Lucia, also known as Mapp and Lucia, is a collective name for a series of novels by E. F. Benson about Emmeline "Lucia" Lucas and Elizabeth Mapp. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Several of them are set in the small seaside town of Tilling, closely based on Rye, East Sussex, where Benson lived for a number of years and served as mayor. Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories. Benson imagined observations of souls observing and perceiving one another. Review: Absolute delight - If you, when reading this book, forget the times in which the stories are set, and just immerse yourself in the characters, then I think I can promise absolute delight. Each character will remind you of someone you know, the situations they get themselves in to, and the solutions they come up with, will usually confirm your identifications. I found myself saying, " that's just like ...... " reading on a little and then smiling to yourself in delight, or even laughing out aloud. You will love, hate, approve, disapprove, agree and become horrified at the machinations of these people, and you could guess early what their solutions to their problems are, or, more likely, step back in amazement at their justifications. Enjoy, this is my third visit, and I have no doubt that I will be back again.

Gorgeous Favourite Read.
Mapp and Lucia will appeal to everyone - unless, of course you are far too 'taresome' ! What a treat the entire series, it is well worth reading all 27 hours worth of these South Coast 1930s upper middle class characters. E. F. Benson imagined observations of souls observing and perceiving one another.

Absolute delight
If you, when reading this book, forget the times in which the stories are set, and just immerse yourself in the characters, then I think I can promise absolute delight. Each character will remind you of someone you know, the situations they get themselves in to, and the solutions they come up with, will usually confirm your identifications. I found myself saying, " that's just like ...... " reading on a little and then smiling to yourself in delight, or even laughing out aloud. You will love, hate, approve, disapprove, agree and become horrified at the machinations of these people, and you could guess early what their solutions to their problems are, or, more likely, step back in amazement at their justifications. Enjoy, this is my third visit, and I have no doubt that I will be back again.

I just love these books. Benson was a great writer. Marvellous characters.

Delicious - if you like that sort of thing. Tarsome if you don’t!
Set by a book group. A very readable and enjoyable comedy of manners - but of its time and place, of course. An improvement (and update) on Elizabeth Gaskell’s work.

The book is too heavy to hold!
I've read most of these before but still enjoy them. I have the book but with over a thousand pages I find it's too heavy to hold so the kindle version is excellent.

Its an e book printed on a photocopier - typeset is too small

Ridiculously tiny font size
The font size in this book is ridiculously tiny. By far the tiniest font I've ever seen used in a book. Do not buy.

it is a great read if you like old fashioned English language and customs

Utterly Unsatisfactory
This is just a poor-quality print out of an e-book version, rendered in tiny type. Virtually unreadable. I have the original version and was hoping to give this as a gift to an fellow E.F. Benson fan. But I returned it immediately.
