The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. 2

At his Best and at his Worst
Volume II of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire shows Gibbon at his best and at his worst. His singular genius was to see that the Roman Empire fell not to the barbarians but to the degrading social fabric of its people. Unfortunately, he also has the tendency to conflate those peoples colonized by Europeans in early modern times with the barbarians who attacked Rome. This tendency led to so much cruelty and ignorance that it cannot simply be passed over as just Enlightenment bigotry. The six books of the Decline and Fall were published from 1776-1789. They were “best sellers” of the day and informed the thinking of the American founders. The need for a virtuous citizenry, the dependence of self-government on a moral fabric, the possibilities of moral and then civilizational decay...all of these were not invented by De Tocqueville but already in Gibbon. If one didn’t know that Gibbon’s dichotomy of civilized/barbarian was used to justify the most egregious acts towards Native Americans, his insights into the relationship between government and the moral fabric would be unsullied. Add to this a rather narrow minded and bigoted view of Roman Catholicism, both ancient and modern, and one has a work with flaws built into its very conception. But one mustn’t forget that Gibbon is the intellectual ancestor of some the Federalist Papers, De Tocqueville and even of Lincoln’s meditations on the necessity of prudence and fortitude in a self-governing people. Recommended reading in the history of ideas but a work whose influence on the modern world has been both a boon and baneful.

History Major's Wives, Be Not Afraid.
I love it because it made the History Major Husband happy. That's why. Know what I want? A book called, "How to Not Have Your Eyes Glaze Over While Not One But Two Husbands Talk About Ancient Rome." That's right. I've been through this twice. You know, I ought to write that book. I bet it'd be spectacular. Wowza, I better call Random House--I've got a winner. Maybe I can do it cosmetics-cop emoji rating style with smilies, frowns, and maybe that little thing that looks like poo but not tacky like real poo. Like Caligula, he would TOTALLY get one of those little crappy emojis.Honestly, this is the one you want. Cause my husband said so. He is The Man. He knows. He says Womersley is the best editor. And when he gets done reading this, he works on his Lego collection. It's the ying, and the yang. Dead Romans, little plastic stormtroopers. Livin' the dream, baby.

Masterpiece
This book, and others in the series, are a masterpiece of history and literature. I especially like the Penguin publishers editions, which come in three total books comprising Gibbon’s six volumes.

Well written and richly detailed.
As per my review of the first volume, the writing may be a little dated, but it is entertaining to read. Gibbon was well ahead of his time in terms of historical accounts. His gives a richly detailed account of the Western Empire's decline and the continuation of the Eastern Empire. Well worth the effort.

Worth reading
This is a very difficult book to read but worth the extra effort. There is a sense of accomplishment with the completion of each volume!

Among the best prose in the English language.
I am still on volume one, and am astonished by the quality of prose. Keep an open internet connection handy to google words however. Some are antique and not currently in usage. This fellow is among the best writers I have ever read. Clive James, Hitchens, Orwell, Huxley, and any historical writer is in debt to Gibbons.

Needed to know about this .
Always wanted to read this but couldn't handle the small type of the cheap copies.

This is NOT the Kindle version of the Penguin book. That gets 5 stars!
The thumbnail gives the impression that this is the Kindle version of David Womersley edition of Gibbon's classic. It is not. What you get is a poorly scanned version of the Decline and Fall. There isn't proper line wrapping and the footnotes take up lots of space. All in all it's unreadable. Get your money back if mistakenly ordered.

Bad and unreadable Kindle Format. Do not buy.
The Kindle format of Volume 2 of Gibbon is broken up throughout in spaces and blanks in sentences, like free verse written on a hallucinogenic. Volume 2 on Kindle is unreadable. I read Volume 1 of Gibbon on Kindle and it was properly formatted.
