BROADWAY
These actors and directors worked broadway. The content is excellent and it is a brilliant satire, sparkling with wit, charm, and humor. I have seen it ten times already and when I found it on prime I was sooooo happy. The best rendition of Cinderella I have ever seen, disney may have modern cinematography, but this movie has genuine class. Beautiful voices. Catchy songs. The actors are all classically trained. The special effects will fit the era but when i show this to teenage girls and ask them when it was made, they never are able to guess this movie is over 40 years old. And yes it requires an education to understand the satire as this movie does use some $10 vocabulary. But for me that's another advantage because who doesn't want to sound smarter than they are? :) I would give this movie 10 stars if I could and myself and all my friends love it.

A wonderful retelling of Cinderella
I love this movie and have since I first saw it on TV back in the 80s. It was a terrible showing, but the movie transcended the static. I've been looking for it on DVD for the last few years and I was so excited to find this copy. The restoration was good. The picture is clear. I haven't listened to the commentary, but the movie itself is of great quality. The reason I enjoy this retelling of Cinderella is because there's a lot more depth to the story while still maintaining the fairytale feel. There is a fairy godmother (who complains about how much work she has to do), a wicked stepmother and selfish stepsisters, leaving the ball before the stroke of midnight and magic. But at the same time, there's the king worrying about being attacked by outside forces (which is why it's so important for Edward to get married to a princess), Edward lamenting his position that restricts his desires, and his companion at arms explaining that this restriction actually exists at every level of society. And best of all, the happy ending is preserved. Richard Chamberlain is excellent as the Prince. Gemma Craven is a perfect Cinderella. The songs are great fun. The Prince gets lectured by his parents about marriage with the song "What Does Love Have to Do with Getting Married?" Edward sings of his ancestors in "What a Comforting Thing to Know". After the ball, Cinderella and Edward sing alone their perceptions of the night with parallel versions of "When He/She Danced with Me". The king and his advisors plan for the ball with the extremely entertaining song "Protocol".I can't recommend this movie enough. If you get the chance, watch it.

Very Boring
First of all I do not want this review to reflect on the vendor who was awesome, because i received the video in 2 days perfectly wrapped and in perfect condition. However this movie isn't worth the CD it is on. I watched this sad rendition of Cinderella to the bitter end , and it is going to Good Will tomorrow. The music was awful, someone trying to write a tune to some kind of terrible poetry. The acting was off key, and obviously not well directed at all. The filming was often foggy; you know the way bad filmographies forget to look out for the glare. The story was dragging and boring, and for some reason went off track of the original fairy tail, so it totally lost my interest, and at one point I found I had gone to sleep. My warning to you is save yourself and don't get it. I got it because I like Richard Chamberlain, but this was dreadful; the worst thing he has ever been in for sure.

Charming Fantasy: visually stunning musical with beautiful songs and dancing
I did not see this movie in my youth, but when I watched it now, I was so glad I had found it. British filmmakers Bryan Forbes and David Frost spared no expense with this lavish Cinderella tale replete with original score and screenplay by the Sherman Brothers. Richard Chamberlain is dazzling as the Prince who sings and dances (with impressive agility and panache) his way to the heart of honey-voiced Gemma Craven (Cinderella). Some scenes were filmed in actual British castles and outdoor scenes were filmed near the breathtaking Austrian Alps. Period costumes and settings are resplendent to the last 18th century detail and set the stage for sweet and light romance. The very talented supporting cast rounds it out with humor and just a dash of solemnity. When the movie debuted at a Royal Command Performance, Queen Elizabeth commented that The Slipper and the Rose waltz was "the most beautiful song (she) had ever heard." I totally agree. I believe in the fairytale that is always in our 'child's' heart. Perhaps if we could all indulge in more entertainment like this instead of the sordid, violent, meaningless and malicious garbage that gluts our media, we would all be happier, more loving and appreciative of each other and of the beauty of life. If real life doesn't look this way, its great to still be able to be swept away on the wings of something as glorious and beautiful as this film. I guarantee you will be singing and dancing along by the end.

Wonderful!! Wonderfull!!
I first saw this as a pre-teen ... and fell in love! There is so much magic and fun and music in this telling of Cinderella! All my friends and I memorized the words to every song! But then it was never seen on TV again, no DVDs, no nothing. After all these years I was beginning to think I had imagined it ... until ... PRIME! I've been SO happy being able to watch to my heart's delight! But alas ... it's leaving PRIME soon! NOOOOOOooooooOOOOooO!!!It's a great retelling of the Cinderella tale in musical style. It is romantic, and funny and warm and enchanting and whimsical. After languishing in obscurity, Amazon brought it to Prime, but it's only for Prime members, you can't rent or purchase it streaming or DVD. Last I checked, only some very expensive re-recorded PAL versions were being offered by third parties. Can't you DO something? ... sigh ... all good things must come to an end ... but trust me. If you love musicals and Cinderella ... or just Richard Chamberlain, do yourself a favor and watch this. Fun for the whole family. (I've got to get my hands on a DVD.)P.S. Streaming version leaves Prime 2/29 but I already see listed what looks like a very high quality DVD that's US compatible for around $20, according to reviews. Yeay!

Finally, in Cinemascope and HD !
I cannot thank Second Sight enough for their restoration of one of my all time favourite films. To see this magnificent musical get the dusting it so fully deserved is pure joy. What a gift ! Shot to a picture ratio of 2:35 in 1976, this film has been only available so far in pan and scan, which means that the picture had been chopped and re-framed to fit our old 4/3 square TV screens. Thank heavens someone had the idea to allow us to finally see it the way the director of photography had intended us to, meaning that we can at last see the WHOLE picture. And what a picture it is ; sharp and steady, crystal-clear images, with brilliant colours to boot. The sound has been cleared up too. If you're a fan of this wonderful classic like I am, trust me, you need the blu-ray copy, immediately.

A childhood favourite now looks fantastic.
I watched this a few times on TV as a kid, and despite being a long musical, I always enjoyed it, from the endearing characters who often made me laugh, to the acting, some really fun songs, and its overall uniqueness, this movie doesn't get boring to me. The Prince isn't a typical pretty boy, he actually has personality and has his own will, not even wanting to get married. This whole film is very fun and entertaining, Hollywood don't make them like this anymore. It also looks fantastic on blu-ray, I've been used to an average version on DVD, which looked like they had just put the VHS version on it, this blu-ray remaster gives the film new life, it's very clear and sharp and colours pop off the screen, this is a blu-ray master done right.

Crushingly beautiful
This is the hidden masterpiece of the Sherman Brothers - known for the music of Junglebook, Mary Poppins and many others. But don't stop there - in my humble opinion "Secret Kingdom", "He/she danced with me" and "Once I was loved" is some of the finest music EVER written and a reminder of just how crushingly beautiful an orchestra can be. Gemma Craven meanwhile is the most divine princess imaginable, the sets are jaw dropping and the rest of the cast superb with plenty of wit and fun. If this isn't already a cult film - it will be one day.

Worth getting in blu ray
I loved this film when I was young and still adore it just as much (if not more) as an adult. I am so glad with my choice to upgrade my DVD for this blu-ray; the transfer is AMAZING quality and it’s great for this classic film get a HD update that future proofs it for later generations to enjoy.Comical lyrics and great songs and grand costumes and scenery are all included in this version of Cinderella. Great script. Enjoyable for kids and adults.

The Slipper and the Rose is a little gem of a film
I really loved this little gem of a film version of the story of Cinderella. The Slipper and the Rose (directed in the UK in 1976 by Bryan Forbes and produced by Stuart Lyons) has lots of things in it, from songs, dance, humor, drama and also wonderful costumes and sceneries.Actress Gemma Craven, a real life Cinderella due to how she got the role (check the Special Feature, as to explain why) is a perfect portrayal. Actor Richard Chamberlain provides both excellent acting and singing abilities, as the dashing Prince Edward. He has a lot of screen time, about the same as Gemma.(Spoiler Alert!) Showing so much story structure of his decision of whom to marry, against his father's choice. The Prince wants marriage for 'Love', whereas his father wants his son to marry in order to avoid War by joining alliance and build a bigger Kingdom. This creates a fair balance of the story between both the prince's and Cinderella's . Also naturally of their time together. There are many fantastic supporting actors, many that are familiar. From Kenneth More, Annette Crosbie and Margaret Lockwood, just to name a few. The songs (by Richard M. Sherman) ranges from good old fashion musical numbers to some wonderful sweet heartfelt songs (particularly Gemma's 'Tell Him')The DVD has on its Menu, Play movie and Scene Selections. Also Special Features, which shows the early production of the film. What are to be seen as well, are the creation of the lavish sets and the casting choice for the Cinderella character. Narrated by Sir David Frost (Executive Producer).I have enjoyed The Slipper and the Rose very much and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes good old fashion romantic musicals.
