There is extra space for cables ?

Yes and No... Between the controllers there is a slot intended to hold cables but after attempting to fit both HDMI and power cable it was way too tight. Unless you very tightly wind the cables and hold them with zip-ties then you will only be able to fit one cable.

will this bag work with the xbox series x?

Sorry but no, its form-fitted only for the Series S and two controllers.

Has anyone gotten rid of the god awful smell?

My did not smell. But hard cases like these tend to have a very distinct chemical factory smell. I have made the mistake of using advice given online on how to get rid of smells and it only made it worse. I recommend trying to air it out outside repeatedly and most of it should go away. But if you feel it is too strong for you to accept even if some of it goes away, just return it.

Will this fit the xbox with the seagate expansion card? or will i have to remove it?

It won't fit with the expansion card. It needs to be stored separately. It technically fits in the pocket for cables between the controllers but then it needs to be in something that keeps it from bouncing around and getting damaged.
