It makes the sound of a nicely Clicky keyboard. I absolutely love mine, and I love the sound, but it definitely doesn't sound like a vintage typewriter, especially not a pre-electric one which is what people generally think of now when they think typewriter. The people who say it sounds like a typewriter--I'd hazard a guess that they don't actually know what a real typewriter sounds like. As for sound level, it's not too loud.
