They are indeed thicker than the average lifting glove. I find them formidable for doing pull-ups. My hands' skin is unharmed. Now, they do not cover the same area as the average lifting glove, which, although not as thick, covers the whole arc between the thumb and first finger you ask about. However, these grip pads cover the areas that come in contact regularly with the handles. They are perfect for pull-ups and chin-ups, where the skin that needs cushion is mostly around the joints of your upper four fingers, not so much your thumb. I am not sure how these pads would work if you tried using them for power-ups or dead lifts, which I don't do and which can put some explosive pressure in that thumb-index finger arc, but I can tell you the pads work fine for me doing dumbbell snatches and double bar dips, no skin getting pinched or anything slipping. If you planned to use these for power-ups and dead lifts, I would recommend you consult with the company directly, because the pads have traction when worn, so they don't slip easily, but they are not strapped to your hands.

Can you wear these while you insert your tampon as well?

I don't see why you can't, make sure you wear extra absorbent.
