Works great with a BreadPal
I ordered this to use with my BreadPal slicing guide (sort of a mitre box for bread), which needs a long knife to work well. It's working wonderfully so far. This knife is so long that it will cut through a thick loaf with only a couple of strokes, reducing the amount of back-and-forth sawing I had to do with shorter knives. The only real issue is that the teeth on this knife are so sharp that it will gouge the plastic bottom of the BreadPal if I'm not careful.Pro:- The knife is long and sturdy.- It makes short work of all the home-made bread I've used it on so far, even loaves that are dense or extra crusty.- The handle is a nice, grippy rubber, and is fairly comfortable for my large handsCon:- I wish the handle were just a touch longer, maybe 1/4", for my big hands. But much longer than that and it wouldn't fit in my knife drawer.- If the blade were a tiny bit thinner it might slide through bread a bit easier. It's about the same thickness as my other bread knives, though, so I can't really complain about this.

It’s a good knife
The knife has a good weight, makes slicing even slices easy. Compared to my old Henckel’s bread knife which is short, well passed its expiry and required vigorous sawing, this long blade cuts through a plain white bread loaf with ease. Sourdough is a little more sawing, but my old knife was so horrible at sourdough it encouraged me to buy a new one, and I’m very happy with it.

Now that's a knife!
I bought this to cut homemade bread using the Bread Pal slicer: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005YCKRMU/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_21.Even after reading the reviews I hadn't properly appreciated the sheer size of this knife until I opened the package. The "sward" jokes in other reviews make sense now! My husband's exact words on seeing the knife for the first time were, "Holy crap! That's a big knife!"However, despite its size, it is lightweight, well-balanced, and very sharp. Using this knife and the Bread Pal, we can now slice our bread so neatly that it looks machine-sliced. No more crooked slices means we can use all of the loaf without waste. Based on the knife's performance cutting bread, I'm sure this knife will also be a great tool for leveling or layering a cake, but I haven't tried that yet.The knife comes with a clear plastic sleeve for storage. However, this sleeve doesn't secure around the knife. (There is a strap with a snap closure, but the strap is too small to actually use - a design failure.) The knife just sits in the sleeve. This still provides some protection to you and your other items if you store the knife in a drawer. Which is where you probably will have to store it, since I have never seen a knife block big enough to accommodate this knife!Although I have not owned it long enough to assess its long-term durability, we have used and washed this knife several times a week and it still appears brand-new.I am very pleased so far and highly recommend this sward.

Big, hearty bread meets its match
Fourteen inches ... in the abstract it doesn't sound so big. It is big. It is sharp. When I have a large loaf of bread to cut, especially when it's on the soft side yet with robust crust, I bring out this knife and it does the job beautifully. The rest of the time, I use a 10-inch bread knife (that one's a Mercer, but based on the quality of this knife I wouldn't hesitate to get Fat Daddio's 10-inch model.) Why don't I use this knife all the time? Fear, mostly. I won't describe my self-wounding incident with this scimitar, but it was not pretty. I treat it with reverence and respect. Storing this huge knife is another issue. I saved the bubble card it came packaged in as a sheath. Anyhow, if you're baking big loaves of crusty bread, get this knife. It is indispensable. Give it a name and treat it with respect. It's a beautiful tool and a relative bargain.
