The mounting hardware included was a bit chintzy, so I used two self-drilling drywall anchors that are rated at 65lbs each. I already had a large box of them, so it did't cost me anything additional out of pocket. So, don't cheap out on the anchors, because those are the real secret to success.

3-1/2". I strongly recommend you use stronger wall anchors.

What size pacakge does this arrive in? aka does it require assembly?

Package is about the same length as the product. The rack is assembled all you have to do is screw it to the wall, but there are no mounting screws included. I just picked up a couple of 100 pound drywall mounting screws and had it up in minutes, looks and works great.

If it is 28 in. long...is it possible to make it 6" shorter?...hacksaw? I only have 22" of height available (only need to store 7 bottles vs 9)

I think you could do that, if you have moderate tool skills. It might require a little bending of the spine piece to make the join support properly.

Semplice ma fa la sua bella scena

Alla vista sembra una robetta da poco.. Invece, una volta montato e riempito di bottiglie, devo ammettere che fa la sua bella figura. L'ho messo in cantina in un posto non di passaggio, ma col senno di poi starebbe bene anche in una stanza sempre visibile, tipo cucina o taverna. È ideale per bottiglie dalla forma standard, quelle maggiormente in circolazione. Le bottiglie troppo bombate non sono adatte.
