It has two modes, one to announce the different houses and say to try him on and then you can switch it to the sorting mode and it will choose a random house for you. You have to press the button to initiate it.

Great talking sorting hat

This was my 25yr old daughters Christmas gift,she loved it, quite realistic with authentic voice.Two issues though,the batteries were flat upon opening,and the house choices aren't random so predictable which is a shameBut overall good

it’s not for a costume by any means, it’s more of a decorative house ornament the quality is okay besides the speaker it has is not what it could be which doesn’t allow it to sound clear enough to understand. overall if you’re looking for a cool thing to put on a shelf then yes get it but if you’re looking for a gift for a costume or for someone to wear on occasion for whatever reason then nahhhh
