Though the volume is primarily about the triumphant return of Superman, it comes at a huge cost--the deaths of millions of innocents. Casual DC comics readers like me are probably vaguely aware that Green Lantern's city, Coast City, suffers a horrible fate in this storyline, but it is really something else to read it unfold. The Return of Superman himself is important, yes, but it almost dwarfs in comparison to the tragedy that befalls Coast City before he comes back and manages to save the day. It's both brutal and brilliant. Superman's return would have been something to celebrate already no matter what, but his return and meting of justice against one of his most vile pretenders is made all the more satisfying because of the stakes and losses felt before his return.
