Under Product Information, it states that batteries are not required. In fact, it needs 2 ‘C’ size batteries.

Lights stopped working within a week. Super hard to get the battery in.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific. I only thought I needed these, because I didn't think the other lights I bought would cover the entire village. They were very pretty in the box and I'm sure they would be as nice as advertised. I just didn't need them once I saw my other set.
