In this case the positives were right. If used as instructed this device makes chain cleaning and lubing quicker and a lot less messy. As for whether it does as good a job as using a grunge brush, it's impossible to say -- the only test is chain life, and there are so many variables that you would have to create a full blown controlled experiment in the manner of Consumer Reports. Somehow I don't think any of the motorcycle publications are up for that.Here are some observations, based on my setup and first use:One. There is a small colored sheet in the package with three warnings, or strong suggestions, they end in exclamation points. FOLLOW THOSE SUGGESTIONS. Actually you won't have much choice about trimming the vertical brushes, there's no way to fit the Kettenmax to your chain until you do. This is the biggest pain in the setup process. I agree with some other reviews, they should sell this kit with sets of brushes precut for the most common chain widths. One piece of advice, watch the manufacturer's video (search on YouTube) and note the scissors. Go to Harbor Freight or Home Depot or somewhere and get a pair of that type of scissors, with serrated blades. I made do with a pair of Cutco kitchen shears, but non-serrated blades, no matter how sharp, are useless. Be patient, take your time, try to get the brush height even top to bottom and from one brush to another. It does not have to be perfect. This step took me over an hour, much longer than it took to do the first cleaning.Two. During cleaning you are advised to rotate the motorcycle wheel slowly. This is important. The brushes on the exit end of the Kettenmax are responsible for containing the cleaner and lube so that they drain down to to the collector jar (I used a coffee can), but still the design basically relies on gravity a.k.a. drainage. If you spin too fast it won't work as well.Three. After cleaning, and again after lubing, wipe down the chain with a shop rag or paper towel to get it as dry as possible. The video does not show this but it helps. The brushes will still leave excess cleaner and lube on the chain even though dripping will be minimal.Four. Put some newspaper under the bike before you start.Five. This should really be first: get a track stand or fit a center stand to your bike. This is the only dealer installed accessory I have on my CB500X and it is well worth the weight and the money. If I had to wheel the bike around the garage to clean the chain, I'm not sure I would ever do it, and I certainly would not be able to use the Kettenmax. Maybe you are not as lazy as I am -- I hope so -- and in that case God bless you, and may your chain last 100,000 miles. But if you're like me, this little gizmo is a great addition to your toolset.
