As a teacher for ten years at the middle school level, I know that these students need to connect with their learning in physical ways. I taught math, social studies, and science, and every single one needed to have some type of concrete application - games, posters, experiments, etc. - for many of my students before they "finally got it". With language arts, writing isn't always a young person's dream. The physical labor of writing alone wouldn't be the only nor the best way for students to learn, e.g. taking notes. However, this interactive journal approach to many ELA topics is a perfect complement to many of my lessons. It has even inspired me to create more interactive pages on my own.
