1 cup = 1 lb. So 2 cups = 2 lbs, etc. I use Walnut Shell for the large/main parts of my pincushions and the Emery Powder for the smaller accents.

Q: Would lining a pincushion with iron-on non-woven interfacing keep the sand from leaking?

Rather than using on iron on interfacing I would use 2or3 layers of the cotton depending on how closeness of the weave. I was concerned about using the walnut shells due to their oil stain on the fabric.

Q: What type of material do you suggest using with emery powder to keep it from coming through the cloth?

For the insert any tight woven fabric will works. I prefer to use quilting fabrics, muslin, some of polyester thick fabrics. Don't forget to make insert a few mm smaller from all dimensions so you won't have any problem when you put emery filled insert to your original pincushion cover.

Q: I mixed 1/2 package with walnut shells. Has anyone else done this and what is the result? I had more than one I wanted to make for a gift.

You can mix them together. Both of them will keep the needles clean and sharp. But the weight of the pincushion will be lighter than the emery filled one.
