Since a good cup of coffee is very subjective you have to experiment a little. Look up French press recipes on the Internet and they will give you a good place to start. You can experiment from there with more time or more coffee for a stronger cup, or less for a weeker cup until you get it right.

What is the plastic thing?

The top is PP plastic, looks to be very strong and well made, The handle is also plastic.attached to the glass container, The plunger is a metal screen system that filters very well, the top knob of the plunger rod is plastic. Over all it seems well made and a perfect size for me as a one cup maker. Price is very good when I bought it. It makes great coffee. Note that the instructions for use are on the side of the box and not on the recipe instructions as some people have complained where are the instructions. SIDE OF THE BOX

I don't think so. I just went ahead and bought a different one. Stainless steel.
