Does this have to be connected to power when in use?

Yes! it comes with permanent attached USB cable. You will need to purchase either a cheap USB Plug for the cable or like myself the cable goes into USB Slots in my monitor/computer and is powered that way. it is NOT battery powered

The description says they are portable but everyone is saying you have to plug them into mains electric? Are they not portable then?

No they are not portable, blatant disregard for advertising, you can certainly move them about of course, but they are not portable in the sense they require USB power, you could use a battery pack, but even the best one will not last long. They would be portable if the lights were rechargeable.

Would this be suitable for filming live stream fitness classes?

I use mine for zooming etc which is great and works well, however i find that plugging them all in to the computer at the same time does not work. I get round this by having one plugged in to my iMac and the other two plugged in to phone chargers. I have not tested them for streaming at distance from the lights but I would recommend them if you are streaming a piece to camera or for video conference call. They are very bright and do come with filters, however I feel they would benefit from a beige filter to give a warmer light. Hope this helps

No, you can't. Unless you devise a hack.
