4th Generation Doctor Mom LED Pocket Pro Otoscope with Both Adult and Pediatric Disposable Specula Tips, Battery, and Protective Hard Plastic Case

This 4th generation Doctor Mom LED pocket pro otoscope is nice quality, well made, and the perfect replacement for my super old Welch Allyn otoscope that I got from my step-grandma who used to work as a doctor. I'm an RN-BSN who likes to have their own medical equipment at home since I have kids and a husband, so I like to know what's wrong with them whenever they get sick in order to know if they really have to go to the doctor or not (really helps cut down on medical bills). My old Welch Allyn otoscope light was so dim despite changing the battery that I couldn't see anything, nor could I figure out how to change the light bulb in it due to not knowing the model or serial number. This otoscope was a cheap alternative that's just as good. It's super easy to use, you just need to install the included battery and turn it on. It has a warm white light that's the perfect brightness and works great for looking inside ears, whereas some newer otoscope have the super bright white light that's not very good for viewing ears. I absolutely love that it came with a hard shell storage box to keep the otoscope and specula's safe and contained. The otoscope feels comfortable in my hand and I'm able to look inside my kids ears with ease. The included ear chart is super helpful as well. Overall, I'm happy with this product and feel like it's worth the money based on the quality.

The product is well packaged. The case was sturdy and effective, easily portable. The note from the vendor was nice, homey touch. I did find the enclosed battery interesting, made in china and neither alkaline nor lithium. Interesting. The light is bright and easy to see. The additional pics of possible ear conditions, was very helpful. The note to remove the battery for storage was excellent, logical, but perhaps forgotten if not mentioned. Overall good product. The durability remains to be seen but appears well built to last.

I’m writing this review after a long period of using this otoscope at home. I bought it when my son was under two years old, and he is now almost three, so it has gotten plenty of use. As a healthcare professional, I find this to be an incredibly useful tool to keep in the house. Even if you don’t have a medical background, it comes with great reference pictures, and you can easily search online for tips on how to use it. The different attachments are very handy, and the device provides a crystal-clear view of the tympanic membrane (eardrum), making it easy to spot any changes caused by sickness. Hands down, this is one of the best things I’ve purchased. I would highly recommend it to any new parent who is left wondering what’s going on when a fever hits or their kid complains of an earache. Of course, the next step is always to see a pediatrician, but it is incredibly reassuring to be able to take a look yourself first.

Overall, I think this is a great pocket otoscope. I am an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor, so I have a lot to compare it to. My everyday comparison is to the Welch Allyn otoscopes with LED bulbs at my office. I bought this to replace a 15+ year old Welch Allyn with a rechargeable handle that I used at home or kept in my white coat for hospital consults. The battery no longer held a charge for more than 5 minutes and I wanted something smaller, lighter, and that used standard batteries. This fit the bill and I am overall quite pleased. I've listed the individual pros and cons below: View - Overall, it is pretty good, but not perfect. You can barely see the light protruding at the inferior aspect of the field of view. Magnification also doesn't seem as good. However, this is a portable otoscope, so I know that concessions had to be made. I'd still rather carry this around than a larger, heavier standard size scope. Bulb color - To those who say the light on this scope is "blue", I disagree. It noticeably more yellow than the cool white of the Welch Allyn LED bulbs. In fact, it is pretty close to the color of standard bulbs. Personally, I think the cooler white (more blue) is better at distinguishing findings on eardrums than yellow or incandescent, but we all have our own preferences. I just wanted to give my opinion on how the color compares to other scopes/bulbs. Brightness - The bulb is plenty bright for everyday use. I think our Welch Allyn LED bulbs are brighter, but this is brighter than the Welch Allyn standard bulbs. The brightness is not adjustable on this scope, but then again, I have never used an otoscope on anything less than full power. Size/weight - I think this is an ideal size for a portable or home scope. The next size up "Dr. Mom" scope, which is comparable in size to a Welch Allyn, uses 2 C batteries and this uses a single A, so I think everybody knows the difference. Professional look - This matters to me since I will occasionally use it on patients outside my office. The "Dr. Mom" inscription on the pocket clip was a non-starter. The good news is that you can remove the pocket clip, which I promptly did. Now it just looks like a small metal otoscope. I had no intention of using the pocket clip anyway. Basically, this is a good, reasonably priced product with a few minor drawbacks but exactly as advertised. My only real beef is the Dr. Mom brand name, which I find somewhat offensive. Just like both men and women can be real doctors, both mothers and fathers can have home duties and care for children. As someone who has experienced gender bias in family courts with a real impact on my role as a father, I think this type of branding needs to go. It perpetuates stereotypes from a previous era. Surely the company can find a gender neutral name or, at a minimum, sell "Dr. Dad" scopes along with Dr. Mom.

Exactly what I needed for an at home otoscope. With having kids, they always seem to have problems with their ears. One has tubes and I was always curious if they have fallen out. With the ability to use this at home, I dont have to go to the doctor every time to check my kids ears. You have 2 different size options for the tip where the light shines through giving two seperate perspectives of the ear canal. Very easy to use and the case it comes with is a bonus! Highly recommend this piece over the others on amazon. It was affordable and perfect for what I needed!

This is an amazing little otoscope for the price. The light is very good. It’s simple to use. My only comment would be better instructions on how to turn it on. It took me a while to find the little black button on the bottom. Overall great otoscope

I have nothing but positive things to say about this product. The price is excellent for a high-quality consumer-oriented otoscope, and the build quality is really solid. I appreciate that it comes with pack containing a good number of tips with three different sizes. The amount of lighting is more than sufficient; I found it rather easy to get a good look at my 3-year-old son's eardrums even with him squirming a bit. I love the peace of mind of being able pre-screen for ear infections so that we can make a better decision about the need to make a trip to the doctor's office. I should have gotten this much sooner!

This is a very good otoscope for the price. I liked the illumination and clarity of this otoscope better than most of the $300 otoscopes I've used. It also appears very sturdy and well made. When looking in my wife's ear, the view was so crisp and in focus I could see the veins on her eardrum. The speculum twists firmly into place and almost locks into place on the head of the otoscope. It comes in a very protective foam lined case with color pictures of normal and infected eardrums on the box. It includes large diameter specula for adults and smaller size for children. Parents wanting to use this on their children, I recommend that you ask your pediatrician or medical professional to give you a training session. You don't want to hurt your child and make them afraid of otoscopy...which will make diagnosing and treating their ear infections very difficult for your doctor in the future. The speculum of the otoscope should never touch/scrape the inner ear canal wall. The inner third of the ear canal (near the eardrum) is composed of bone and is covered with a thin layer of skin. This skin is easily abraded. The ear canal protects itself by having many nerves in this area to alert you to any actions occurring in this region. Scraping the inner ear canal can be very painful. If you are trying to look at the eardrum and you can't see around the a bend in the ear canal, do not use the speculum to press around the bend or pry against the ear canal. This can be very painful. Instead pull on the pinna (what you call the ear). Pull the pinna up and back to straighten the ear canal to get your best line of sight. Second, you need to stabilize the hand holding the otoscope. If the child jerks, you could hurt them with the speculum. With the hand that is holding the otoscope, look in the ear while the bent knuckles of that same hand are pressed against the skull. Use your other hand that is not holding the otoscope to pull on the pinna and straighten the ear canal while also helping to stabilize the head. If for some reason the inner portion of the ear canal is abraded, seek medical attention. Ear canals are dark and moist, a great place for infection to develop.....so always go to the doctor if this happens. Another issue is how you advance the speculum into the ear canal. Don't jam it all the way in and then look. Place the speculum tip in the entrance of the canal, look through the viewer, and then slowly advance the speculum into the ear canal while you are looking through the otoscope until you see the ear drum. Then slowly advance more until the eardrum is in focus as much as you think it can be in focus. The eardrum is extremely thin and lies around 3/4 (child) to 1 inch (adult) from the external ear opening, we do not want to damage it. When looking at the eardrum, remember that it has blood vessels, and if the child has been screaming bloody murder right before or during the otoscopy then the ear drum could be red just because of the screaming and not because there is infection. Please keep a log of what you see in the ear if anything is abnormal. For those who have scheduled appointments with the ENT, you know it can take a long time to get in. You may catch the fact that your kid is having an episode of ear problems with your otoscope, but it could be resolved before your appointment. It is still important to tell the ENT what you saw and how long it occurred. Recurrent ear problems need to be documented. Anyway back to the otoscope review. Bottom line is that it would be very difficult to find a better otoscope than this model from my experience with otoscopes especially at this price.

This otoscope is fantastic! I was a little dubious about buying this as the cheap otoscope I already have for home use isn't very good. I work as a nurse practitioner in a busy walk in centre. I see ear problems every day and bought this based on the reviews and the fact that the lens is glass as I got fed up with playing hunt the otoscope when I needed one. It has exceeded expectations. The light is lovely and bright and the glass lens gives a sharp, clear view of the ear canal and ear drum. It's actually better than one of the Keeler ones we have at work as the light is so much brighter. An excellent bit of kit at an excellent price! More than happy with my purchase!

I bought this as my 18 month old daughter keeps getting ear infections and the otoscope allows me to keep a check on her ear. It is a very good quality piece of kit and very easy to use. It comes with a variety of nozzle(?) sizes so it can be used on adults too and the hard case means everything can be kept together and neatly stored away. An excellent product I would highly recommend.

As a retired physician with 50 years of experience in examining patients' ears, I needed a replacement lightweight otoscope for use with family and friends. Previously, I've owned two Heine otoscope/ophthalmoscope sets and a Keeler Vista otoscope/ophthalmoscope set. I liked the Heine sets, but they eventually needed replacing after constant use. The Keeler Vista was fine, but it was quite heavy and you almost needed to take out a mortgage to buy replacement bulbs. I cannot speak highly enough concerning this Dr Mom otoscope. It is lightweight but has a quality feel to it and gives a superb view of the auditory canal and tympanic membrane. Also, it was excellent value for money so is fully deserving of a five-star review.
