Review: A good read! Review: Munzner creates an excellent summary of all the important literature in the field, synthesizing it into frameworks that are relevant and extremely useful in designing visualization. Munzner provides a good solid number of examples of different approaches to visualizing data given a certain type and task, as well as how they break down into the respective frameworks. With each chapter, she drawn on a LOT of literature from the field to outline best practices concerning each possible aspect of visualization. There is little in the way of concrete code or instructions on how to create this in a visualization tool or environment. This is both a positive and negative. Many other books in the field focus heavily on a specific toolset and is thereby limited by the design options they provide, which this book avoids. However, I found the book's described methodology leading me to design choices that I think are correct for the task, but difficult or impossible to visualize with the technological tools I have available. Though, this was hardly a huge issue. I found the one down side to be that while Munzner adequately describes how to break down data and task into abstractions, there is little in the way of direction of how to connect those to the visualization you are trying to design. It was only over trying to use this multiple times before we started to see why it was useful to break it down those ways. Overall though, this is a very useful and systematic way of building visualizations and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to create effective ones.

An excellent and accessible overview to the study of visualization. Highly recommended.

Of many visualization books I've read through, this one is my favorite for teaching and research briefs. Very good visualization book for practical design and research. I like the focus on data and analysis tasks to drive visual design. Pair this with Tufte's Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and you're set to help newcomers understand visualization in the modern age of visual analytics.

This book provides both a sound foundation of premises, and a thoroughly developed series of design choices with rationales and instructions. Itโs a fine place to start a journey in viz!
