This litter is a clay based litter, which will contain sodium betonite.

Q: Should this natural litter be gray and unscented/odorless and not black and scented?

Yes, I have bought this item many times and it is gray and odorless.it seems to work as well as the scented. I have two cats, one of whom is insulin-dependent diabetic and he urinates A LOT!

Q: How often do you have to change the litter

I scoop every other day or 3 days with 2 cats, add litter if needed and change completely after 1- 1/2 weeks.
