Review: Booting a 2017 iMac off this and it flies - I've got a 27 inch iMac, quad core i5 at 3.3GHz, 32GB of RAM, running Sequoia via OpenCore Legacy Patcher. By rights it should have gone in a skip by now. The internal Fusion Drive is so slow it's basically a shelf for things I never open. So I plugged in a 2TB Extreme Pro and made it the boot drive. Over a year later it's still my daily machine. It boots off USB perfectly. No fuss, no hangs, no weird permission problems, and the difference in feel is night and day. The Fusion Drive is now just dumb storage. Everything that matters lives on the SanDisk and the whole machine behaves like a much newer computer. Worth being clear about what it can and can't fix. The Mac still has limits that no drive solves. Some newer apps have started falling over, the Claude desktop app being one. That's the CPU and the unsupported OS, not this. But for everything else it's given a beautiful screen and a decent machine several more years of proper working life. I hammer it. Big files, constant read and write, running as the system disk which is about as hard as you can push an external drive. It hasn't skipped once. Five stars. Cheaper than a new computer and it did more than a new computer would have. If you've got an old Mac with a tired internal drive, this is the fix. Review: Very fast and reliable portable SSD - The SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD 2TB is an excellent external drive for fast file transfers and reliable storage. The NVMe technology delivers very impressive speeds, and I was able to move large files and videos quickly without noticeable delays. The drive feels compact and well built, making it easy to carry in a bag or pocket. It’s especially useful for backing up large files or working with media projects where speed matters. The only downside is the price, which is higher than standard external drives. However, considering the performance and build quality, it feels worth it if you need fast portable storage. Overall, a powerful and dependable portable SSD for anyone needing quick data transfer and extra storage. ## Features - Save time storing and transferring data with powerful NVMe solid state performance featuring 2000MB/s read and 2000MB/s write speeds - A forged aluminum chassis acts as a heatsink to deliver higher sustained speeds in a portable drive that’s tough enough to take on any adventure - Travel worry-free with a 5-year limited warranty and a forged aluminum chassis-silicon shell combo that offers a premium feel and added protection - Up to three-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance, and a handy carabiner loop for securing your drive all deliver extra peace of mind when you’re out in the world - Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 8, Windows 10 and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required for Mac, see official SanDisk website) ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B08RX3343D | | Best Sellers Rank | 410 in Computers & Accessories ( See Top 100 in Computers & Accessories ) 3 in External Solid State Drives 172 in Components & Replacement Parts | | Box Contents | SSD | | Brand | SANDISK | | Brand Name | SANDISK | | Cache Memory Installed Size | 4 | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | Camera, Desktop, Gaming Console | | Connectivity technology | USB | | Customer Package Type | Standard mailing box with padding | | Customer Reviews | 4.4 out of 5 stars 10,681 Reviews | | Data Transfer Rate | 2000 Megabytes Per Second | | Digital Storage Capacity | 4 TB | | Digital storage capacity | 4 TB | | EU Spare Part Availability Duration | 1 Years | | Enclosure Material | Aluminium | | Form Factor | 2.5-inch | | Global Trade Identification Number | 00619659184735 | | Hard Disk Description | Solid State Drive | | Hard Disk Form Factor | 2.5 Inches | | Hard Disk Interface | USB 3.0 | | Hard disk form factor | 2.5 Inches | | Hard disk interface | USB 3.0 | | Hard-Drive Size | 4 TB | | Hardware Connectivity | USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 | | Hardware Platform | Mac | | Installation Type | External Hard Drive | | Item Dimensions L x W x Thickness | 14.7L x 2.7W x 28.1Th centimetres | | Item Type Name | SanDisk Extreme® Pro Portable 4TB External SSD Hard Drive 6.35cm (2.5") USB 3.2 Gen 2 (USB 3.1) | | Item Weight | 78 Grams | | Manufacturer | SanDisk | | Manufacturer Part Number | SDSSDE81-4T00-G25 | | Media Speed | 2000 Megabytes Per Second | | Model Name | Extreme Pro | | Model Number | SDSSDE81-4T00-G25 | | Network Connectivity Technology | USB | | Number of Items | 1 | | Product Features | Hardware Encryption, Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant | | Product Warranty | 5 year manufacturer | | Read Speed | 2000 Megabytes Per Second | | Special feature | Hardware Encryption , Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant | | Specific Uses For Product | Business, Multimedia, Personal | | UPC | 619659184735 | | Unit Count | 1.0 count | ## Product Details - **Brand:** SANDISK - **Colour:** Black - **Compatible devices:** Camera, Desktop, Gaming Console - **Connectivity technology:** USB - **Digital storage capacity:** 4 TB - **Hard disk description:** Solid State Drive - **Hard disk form factor:** 2.5 Inches - **Hard disk interface:** USB 3.0 - **Installation type:** External Hard Drive - **Special feature:** Hardware Encryption, Portable, Shock Resistant, Water Resistant ## Images ![SanDisk 4TB Extreme PRO Portable SSD - Up to 2000MB/s Read Speeds - Black - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71z2lEHwfNL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Color, Size, Style** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: Hi, my new extreme v2 1050mb/s is only getting 40-100mb/s . why? it's on usb 3.2 gen 1 (the old usb 3.0).** A: To clarify, the speed you can transfer files to and from this drive depends on the read/write speeds of the drive you are transferring from. If your pc storage drive has a read speed of 250 mb/s then that's the speed the files will transfer even though the USB drive will write faster it can't get the data off of the pc storage drive fast enough. Hope this helps a little bit. **Q: Has the 2TB Pro 1050mb drive password protection?** A: Dear Cath Harrison, My name is Shira from SanDisk Customer Care. I would like to inform you that the drive will have password 3rd party application on it pre-installed. You may contact us via our support email: english_support@sandisk.com and provide us with the date of this post. Best regards, Shira SanDisk Global Customer Care **Q: With apples camera (usb cable) can i use this drive with just a charging cable? as currently have to use a powered usb hub with a drive.** A: The Sandisk Drive draws it's power and communication (Files) through a single USB-C Cable. It depends whether the Apple camera's connection can output enough power to run the Drive. Do you use the Charging cable to transfer Data as well as charge the Camera ? If it's just for charging i'd think it's not going to work. I personally would send an Email to Sandisk & Apple to enquire if it's possible **Q: Will this work for the Dashcam in my Tesla?** A: I use it on a 2016 Mac book pro,,,, it works well, if you back to this ssd through time machine it will auto format the drive to Mac format the first time you use it. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Booting a 2017 iMac off this and it flies *by C***Y on 4 September 2026* I've got a 27 inch iMac, quad core i5 at 3.3GHz, 32GB of RAM, running Sequoia via OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
