can you plug in a chromecast or does it have to be a firestick?

You can, however, you will not be able to watch anything beside youtube due to the anti piracy software in the projector.

can you watch nextflix amazon prime or hulu?

This depends on your input/source. screen mirroring from your phone/tablet will not work but if you play on phone/tablet device and hard wire/use a cord from device to projector you can watch anything you want.
