I was surprised they're made of plastic, because they look and feel almost like painted wood. They seem to be cut of a full square rod (not empty inside) but they are light. Even the sound they make against each other is almost like wood. It seems like they can be washed in water and would last forever. The size is 1 cm (13/32 inch) square, which, I believe, is the original size. The smallest blocks are just 1 cm cubes which is smaller than regular dice, and will be a choking hazard to very young children, so it's generally not for children below 3 years old.The set contains 74 blocks, including four each of the longer sizes (10 to 5 cm), 6 x 4 cm, 10 x 3 cm, 12 x 2 cm and 22 x 1 cm. This is good size set to let children learn colors, quantitative relationships, sizes, numbers, adding and multiplying. The small size makes the set very transportable as they fit in a very small bag. It would still be fun to also have a jumbo version of this set, because your genius kids may be ready to learn math at much younger age than three.
