Special Features Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 ; The characters; AXS TV: a look at Nymphomaniac; Nymphomaniac volume l trailer; Teaser; Nymphomaniac Vol. 2; The director; The sex; Nymphomaniac volume ll trailer Review: Very engaging for all of your senses!! ๐ - I love these films!! I've seen them a few times!! Very thoughtfully written and directed!!! How the story is told, I think makes this film as interesting as it is.. the way she digresses, as she's telling it and moves through her childhood, adolescence and adulthood but in all different orders.. It's one of those films where you have to watch and listen very intently to keep up with the story!! It's also very stimulating as she speaks of her sexual journey and what she's done and what she's liked. How matter of fact she is,.. Not only about herself but her experiences with sex and how she's been treated too!! It's a very engaging film, that you don't want to stop watching.. I loved them both.. Great to watch as a couple, but also great to watch alone!! I might add that it does have several triggers in it, so maybe check those out before purchasing/watching it - if you're worried. Other than that, the worrying is besieging and I can't think of any negatives just now, other than trivets of violence and sexual behaviour that need might not like. But it is true to the story and its about what makes her who she is!! Enjoy!! ๐ฏ๐โค๏ธ Review: Nymphomaniac volumes 1 & 2 - Very happy with the order

don't be put off but don't watch if you are easily shocked.
A very erotic film in two parts. Received much criticism on its release and didn't do well at the box office. Worth watching for a cast of star names but far too long and all rather self-indulgent. Charlotte Gainsbourg is convincing as the nymphomaniac. Nevertheless, don't be put off but don't watch if you are easily shocked.

Five Stars
Tarkovsky does porn. This could be seen as pute sexploitation in the first edition, and it certainly runs a fine line, but it works in this fuller edition. At an emotional price. It is the opposite of arousing, despite portraying most of the perversions. The reason, I think, is the refusal of Charlotte Gainsbourg to appear naked, so that ehr head is superimposed on the body of some other lady; also the use of prosthetics. The result is a lot of sex whihc is disembodied and emotionless - a bit like porn. And that's the point - as one of Joe's mates put it, there's something missing - love. Joe is destroyed in the end by her sexual drives. The first half is funny, with some dreamy memory scenes as the child Joe walks in the park with her father; along with a series of disquistions more or less loosely tied in wiht the sex - some of them irritating. This half is usually very funny though I found it hard to remain with the discussion of how your character is portrayed by cuttng your fingernails of your left or right hand first. The second half can be very harrowing - the self-abortion scene and the discussion on abortion is not recommended to male feminists who don't want their mind changed - actually it's probably not recommended for anyone. The fate of the impotent leering guy at the end (the porn audience, us?) is a bit anti-climatic. In the end, Anti Christ remains the best of his depression trilogy - this has flaws, as has Melancholia (I'd like to change this to four satars but can't)

Outstanding.
Not a usual Hollywood film. A very profound and challenging film to see. It's not so much about the sex itself but what's behind certain attitudes and behaviour, that some might, under prejudice and useless morals, consider outrageous, disgusting, etc. It is simply perfectly human. Nothing more, nothing less. Inspite of the hard scenes picturing sadomasochism (which I personally found rather heavy to look at) the rest is nothing out of the common. The film is diturbing from an emotional and psychological point of view. The dialogues between the leading female role (Joe, played by an outstanding and courageous Charlotte Gainsborough) and the supporting male role is very subtle and is, infact, the true essence of the film. Though the film is for adults, it doen't mean every adult can see this film and appreciate its value in content, drama and imagery. It is NOT a pornografic film!

I still don't know what to make of it.
If you are looking for an easy film (sorry, correction, films) to help pass your boring Saturday evening that you would of most likely of spent watching Ant and Dec in some program, because lets face it they're everywhere. This isn't it. It would bring you into the early hours of Sunday morning! Good god it is long! In ways I thought it was good and quite touching in ways. But then I thought that explicit sexual things are just being thrown in just for a shock factor and putting an artistic twist on it without the film really going anywhere. It could of easily been put into a normal length feature film if you got rid of all the pretentious bull s***. I did not watch these films in one sitting, otherwise I probably developed bed sores, but watched it over two evenings. When it got towards to the end scene I did feel totally mugged! I had relatively enjoyed the films but then I had the rug pulled from under me and some swear words were uttered, I wont lie. So overall, it was good, but trying to hard and had a stupid ending.

Not a porn film.
A very good film, No, it's not a porn film at all. It is heartfelt and at times disturbing. A woman who is fully aware and understanding of what she is and her getting what she needs. The ending surprised me and I really was not expecting it, however I felt that after what she had gone through, it was not so surprising. The only stable part of her life that she cherished was that of the relationship she had with her father ( Christian Slater ) and each time it was focused on in the film it was a reminder she was more than a woman who needed to release and realise her needs.I recommend watching this with an open mind.

A kind of modern Fanny Hill.
Typical Lars v Trier, with slightly disturbing story which is disappointingly less arousing than one would expect from a description of the plot. I'm not sure how much it contributes to the sum of human understanding. It does have a few memorable moments however, notably the arguments between two somalians about how they wish to share her.

This was the film that ignited my Lars Von Trier obsession.
This was the film that ignited my Lars Von Trier obsession. I am a difficult audience, I find that most films bore me in the first 5 min and eventually I'll stop paying attention entirely. This film, however, is the first that I can recall to ever have me hooked and glued to the screen from the very first scene all what way through till the end of Vol 2. I've never been so challenged by a film and yet so intrigued to the point where I literally wanted to grab a note pad and pen and start writing down all the symbolic meanings and artistic interpretations I was experiencing while watching. Lars creates art. Nymphomanic was my gateway into this world of absolutely brilliant cinema. The DVD arrived sooner than expected, which was lovely as I'm so happy to add it to my collection, it was a very reasonable price and was in perfect condition. I only wish all of his works were this easy to access!

18. Rated XXX-cellent
With all the hype built up around its release, one's first thought would be that "Nymphomaniac" is just glorified porn. Actually, it is far from being even pornographic. Split into 2 parts (Volume I-117 mins, and Volume II-124 mins), and divided into 8 chapters, the film follows Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a woman in her fifties, a self-diagnosed sex maniac, spinning a tale about her sex life from childhood through to her middle-age. Unfolding a series of flash-backs, Volume I recounts Joe's vigorous childhood and youthful erotic experiences, while Volume II contemplates her desires against the overpowering pressures and constraints of adulthood. Taking in the whole of the singular human experience, including the body and the mind, sex and love, and all the connections between them, in the end the story comes full circle, almost as if it were a thought-provoking psychological insight into a world of sexuality, loneliness, and love. Director Lars Von Trier, as the passionate, creative film-maker that he is, once again overflows his self righteous, controversial views into his work, not worrying about how outrageous these may be. Being mostly narrative and drama, the movie contains about 20 minutes of sexual material throughout the entire 4 hours, featuring some explicit adult scenes. Some may find these depictions erotic, but this material is relatively restrained, and so is unlikely to offend anyone, especially those familiar with the director's work. Obviously not an easy film to watch, but a very interesting one which requires close attention and an open mind. Complex, dark, raw, repellent, stimulating, lyrical, shocking, intelligent, often hilarious, occasionally exhausting, "Nymphomaniac" is simply not the pornographic epic that the press have been claiming to be. Rich in content, depth and imagery, it is a movie for adults, but not in the sense mostly associated with this term. XXX, indeed: X-uberant, X-hilarating, X-istential. Aspect ratio: 2.35:1 Audio: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, English: LPCM 2.0 Subtitles: English SDH Run time: 241 minutes Note: This blu-ray edition is not the complete 326-minute version of the film. That is to be found on 2015's Director's Cut.
