They dissolve the moment they touch the water.... they're gone before they ever reach the gravel. Is there some technique I'm missing??

These are intended more for use in sand than in gravel, but the basic idea is the same and if you have enough gravel you should be able to make it work. You want to hold the tab firmly between your thumb and index finger so that as much surface area is covered by your fingers as possible, and then jam it completely down into your substrate as FAST as you can.
