How do you detach the cover?

the clear cover attached to the scale with two C-shape clips, like the Lego minifigure's hand. the trick is knowing the opening of this C-clip. It goes along with the wall of this cover. so flip open the cover to vertical position, and pull it to the side.

what is the total dimension of the unit, not just the scale portion?

The total dimensions of the unit are 4 7/8" by 2 3/4" by 3/4". the dimensions of the box are 5 1/2" by 3 1/2" by 1"

Is this unit splash resistant?

I use it to weight espresso at the machine and I splash it almost every day, still working. I have tested several different scales with timers and this one for me is the fastest, most accurate and easy to use scale.

Is it big enough to put a mug on it while using an aeropress?

The coffee mug will fit on the weighing platform that measures approximately 3-1/8" long x 2-3/4" wide. Hope that answers your question. I use my scale to weigh my coffee beans for espresso. I do not use an aeropress, so I don't know why you would be weighing it as you are pressing the coffee?
