Superb read
I’m a big fan of this series - and Fronto - and this is an excellent addition. I also knew very little about Caesar’s African campaign so it was very enlightening as well.Very enjoyable and well written as always. Highly recommended.Only downside was that with the Kindle edition there were a lot of typos and punctuation errors, which was a shame.

Great historical fiction book about Rome and its legions
S.J.A. Turney - another of my favourite historical fiction authors. Never lets you down. Great writer. Recommended.

Bit late in reviewing but.....
Another truely great story of Caesars time in Africa, written by Mr Turney. As the author states, the written accounts by, probably Hirtius are not as compete as Caesars previous accounts so a fair bit of reasoning and guesswork surrounds the skirmishes and battles throughout. However as a work of historical fiction, I do not believe Mr Turney is too far away from the truth as logic sometimes dictates that events have occurred in the timeline portrayed. The maps at the start of the book as usual are very helpful in finding my way around areas that I previously was only loosely familiar with thanks to "Rome - Total War" although the Numidians and their tactics are familiar thanks to that game.I am left fascinated yet again and am very content to have this work as a broad base to describe the events against the rebel army. What I am less pleased with is the amount of silly spelling mistakes on many pages of the book.I will gladly proof read for free if you want another checker of your work and promise to still buy the book when released to add to my collection.I await patiently the next instalment of the Fronto series.Meantime; "May the Force be with you"

Great series, great writing
This is the long anticipated next episode of the adventures of Fronto. Amazing character and story line. So good you can read multiple times. Like old friends coming to visit. Really recommend if you like the Roman period.

Another Great Book in the Marius the Mules Series
I loved the book as I have done all the previous ones. S.J.A. Turney yet again weaves an interesting tale mixing fiction with history. My only complaint is that the author needs to use a better spell checker. I have never read a book with so many mistakes!

Addictive
I don't know what I will do when Fronto and company come to the end of their travails. Being with them has been a very enjoyable experience. Looking forward to their final campaign in Spain. Bravo Simon Turney!

Another Great Installment!
I love the Marius Mules series and this one did not disappoint. I reread the Egyptian War book prior to refresh my memory as to all the key players. The African War seemed to be one of serial skirmishes and debacles and that made things really interesting. Had Caesar lost his edge? Was he buying into his own hype? Whatever the case, Turney drafted a very believable tale and made something that easily could've become boring and repetitive (multiple skirmishes) into something completely engrossing. Two books left in the series - and I'm definitely looking forward to them! Thanks, SJA, for a wonderful book!

A marvellous depiction of the African civil war.
4 star for this marvellous rendition of the seldom narrated episode of Caesar's struggle in Africa (modern day Tunisia). The author presents us with a precise month-by-month account of the tactical difficulties encountered by Caesar, his well-documented out-of-character lapses of judgement, and a solid narration of military operations which indeed were a much closer call than most history books led us to believe. The author wraps it all up in his delicious knack for romanticization, placing our beloved Fronto in the thick of it all, well in the tradition of "the mules" saga, even though the verve and pace of the Gallic War through volume 9 are not to be retrieved.

Not in line with the previous 12
Maybe one of worse of SJA Turney books. It seems wrote to fill the Marius Mules year release. Too short (actually 270 pages) the story is sometimes boring. If you hope know about Fronto family, background, etc. forget it. The only link with the previous 12 books is Fronto’s name.
