Excellent, I love this style of music. Though some of the sounds now seem a bit dated, João Gilberto is a true innovator, whose influence is still felt in Brazil and elsewhere, and this inspirational work remains a timeless classic.I have to say that I am very pleased with the remastering. The other recordings I have heard are muddy and, as an unfortunate result, when I first heard these songs I had little interest, being much more impressed by João's later works, such as his eponymous 1973 album and Amoroso. However, the tastefully enhanced recordings have brought new life into the long out of print 1959 classic. I was ecstatic when I found this album is finally being reprinted, and I hurried to get a copy.The additional tracks are also enjoyable and represent the outstanding influence this work had throughout Brazil.

Vem com as 12 faixas originais e uma dúzia de outras gravações de época, a maioria do próprio João Gilberto ou cantada por ele. Um verdadeiro clássico da música brasileira! João Gilberto pode não ter sido, a rigor, o criador da Bossa Nova, pois esta foi sendo gestada durante anos por diversos músicos, mas a sua batida no violão foi um divisor de águas, uma proeza criativa que influenciou uma geração de músicos jovens e que queriam uma batida diferente, uma música moderna e que, inclusive, chegou a influenciar o jazz, levando inúmeros músicos americanos a tentar cantar e tocar bossa nova. Imperdível!

Oddly, only the first fifteen songs on this CD are Joao Gilberto. The rest of them are bossa nova versions by other artists. They are listed on the back cover, but not mentioned on the front cover. It's Gilberto's songs that led me to buy this CD. It's his songs that were on the original record. I could do without the other songs. Still, I'm very happy to have them, as otherwise I wouldn't have heard of these singers. It's a really wonderful CD, the heart of bossa nova.

I love every song, especially those from Orfeo do Carnaval, which was one of the first movies with an all-black cast.It brings back memories for me from when I lived in Rio de Janeiro.

If you like bossa nova, this is the CD to have. Wonderful selections by none other that Joao Gilberto, the personification and creator (with authors Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes) of the bossa nova. Includes some bonus tracks with Joao Gilberto singing in three songs songs from the Orfeo do Carnaval soundtrack, but also hard to find version by singers from the early 60s Elizete Cardoso, Alaide Costa, Norma Bengell with wonderful arrangements. A true find and a must have for your collection.

High quality original samba, if you're even slightly interested in the Brazil/Portuguese boom in the late 50s early to mid 60s, you NEED this. Essential album, whips by in a flash, very romantic. The most influential Brazil/samba album at the time and probably in the history of the country. Good reissue, too.

If you are into Brazilian popular music (MPB), including its early years in the late 1950s, this is a CD to treasure. It's the real stuff. Joao Gilberto & Elizete Cardoso offering the first recorded bossa nova, Chega de Saudade (loosely, "no more blues"). Actually, several versions of that famous song. 26 tracks altogether from Joao, Alaide Costa, & others, inclusing Desafinado and A Felicidade from the 1959 film Orpheu Negro (Black Orpheus). To me, the whole CD is Ah, Felicidade!

I absolutely love Joao Gilberto, he's my favorite singer of all and this track is another that leaves you kicking back and relaxing, or, of course, always great for romantic evenings (or afternoons or mornings).I love to light candles and listen to Joao Gilberto in the evening. So nice . . .

What a wonderful treat to hear the beginnings of bossa nova sung by the high priest himself. Seemingly simple vocals but dripping with a sense of place and time. Mostly voice and guitar, melodic, rhythmic, and percussive all at the same time. There are many versions of Chega De Saudade but by far this is the best. Joao is the master of this art form and this is him at his best. With Jobim's music, the 2 are a matchless combination. It makes me think of heat, sun, wind, water and romance. All the things Brazil is known for. - errand girl for rhythm
