How do you take the backing off? I've tried pulling and twisting and nothing works

You sort of pinch it to pull the back piece apart.

How do you remove the buttons?

They are very easy to remove with the buttons it comes as a pin so you can clip and un-clip the pin by pushing and applying pressure on it

do you have to remove the button before washing the item?

No...removing the button will damage the pin-retainer.

How in the world do I get these buttons off?? I've tried everything aside from busting into my husband's tool box. I have literal sores on my fingers.

There is a small round piece at the end of the cowboy button, pull on the small round piece and pull back to remove it.
