Q: Will an insulated food container fit inside the lunchbox like a thermos funtainer? They are at least 3 inches in diameter

I believe it would be a tight fit

Q: Is this deep enough to hold pill bottles?

Not standing. They would fit if you have them on their backs. If the bottles are more the traditional size ( white lid, amber bottle) or like a large Tylenol size bottles. I was able to fit 48 gel pens into the case. It would hold about 4 or 5. Tight on 5.

Q: Is the case fabric or is it hard shell?

It's made of sturdy outer shell that is lightweight and made of polyester and crack-resistant EVA. The general feel is of soft but structured shell and the upper layer is made of fabric.

Q: What are the inside dimensions (sides look significantly thick)? Thx.

I cannot answer that at this minute, because my grandson has the box, but I'll say that the box was larger than I anticipated and the sides were not inordinately thick. My grandson loves it and didn't find it too large. It does hold numerous pencils, a box of crayons, a box of colored pencils, scissors, glue stick and still lots more room!
