I use a combination of 6N + 6D, with just a shot of 5N + 5D to make my roots just subtly darker than the rest of my hair, and to provide a little depth to the color when I do the "drag through" the length in the last 10 minutes of total color time. Our highly chlorinated municipal water can really fade any color, and may sometimes cause tint changes that can make the "tone" of the color more "red" or "orange." Should that occur, I always keep some "C" (Ash) tone colors, for example "6C" or "5C" on hand, in case I decide to add a shot of the "C" tone to mellow out any "too red" or "brassy" tones. Even the vanicream free and clear conditioner gives me a little itchy scalp, but so far, vanicream free and clear is the LEAST itchy, most tolerable conditioner I've found. NO problem on her scalp. No break outs nor losing of hair. **Q: Will this turn black hair lighter?** A: I have grey and black hair. The black hair remains black. Only the grey picks up a lighter shade. **Q: can I mix chestnut with brown. I am looking for a medium brown I don't want my grays to turn too dark?** A: You can mix colors. They are darker than you think. 5 is dark brown, 6 is medium to dark. N will cover grays best. If you mix try to have at least one be a N. I use 6 or mix 6 and 7 for a lighter medium brown. Mixing 4 and 5 will be very dark. Maybe start with 5 and 6? I do like the product.
