Review: Excellent speeds! Brought my computer back to life! - So I am a traditional computer technician that uses traditional hardware like the 3.5 7200RPM IDE/SATA drives. I was currently using a 3.5 7200RPM SATA II drive since my motherboard only supports up to SATA II. My computer was noticeably starting to slow down. When waking it from sleep it would take almost a full 2 minutes before I could do much with it and even then it would limp around randomly slowing to a halt before being forced to reboot only for the problem to come back later. A usual boot time was around 3-5 minutes. I tested the HDD and it was fine along with all my other components. I just had a lot of stuff loading up and that's how I wanted it to be and I believe I was out growing a traditional spinning HDD. So I looked into Solid State Drives. I first bench-marked my current HDD setup with Crystal Disk Mark and got an average of 62.73 MB/s READ and 61.37 WRITE. If you don't know any better, with today's technology, those are awfully low numbers. So I decided to try an SSD. After all they have been approved upon greatly since their first appearance and they are more reliable then ever and claim to last up to 20 years if taken care of. Mind you my motherboard is a bit old and only supports up to SATA II, not SATA III which would give me 6g/b speeds instead of SATA II which is up to 3g/b speeds. I cloned my traditional HDD over to the SSD using Acronis and booted with the new SSD. To my amazement my computer booted in literally 15 seconds. I am not over exaggerating at all. I thought to myself that it was a fluke and rebooted to try again. Same results, 15 second boot time. So I bench-marked and my SSD READ was 277.14 MB/s and 226.18 MB/s. It blew my mind. My computer booted up in 15 seconds, waking from sleep took 5 seconds, usually less like 2 seconds and all my programs just launch instantly virtually no wait time involved, at least nothing compared to the HDD. Using my computer now feels like I am turning a light switch on and off, its that fast. The bench-marks tests show that the SSD is over a 400% increase in speeds compared to the HDD and if my motherboard supported SATA III I could be seeing much larger numbers, maybe even in the 400 MB/s with over 800% increase in speeds from the traditional HDD. I may just have to replace my motherboard to take advantage of the speeds I am currently not getting. Above all this is easily the most cost efficient way to bring new life to an old or even a brand new computer that still runs off a traditional spinning drive. Some words of advice. When switching from an HDD to an SSD, to take advantage of the full speeds, make sure your motherboard supports SATA III but if it only supports SATA II you will still see significant improvements. Also, make sure your BIOS is set to use ACHI. If it is set to IDE or SATA you will not get the full speeds. And if your operating system was originally installed using IDE or SATA, and then you switch over to ACHI, your computer will not boot properly. Go back to IDE/SATA and google "Registry change from IDE to ACHI." You will need to change a simple registry key in order to make your operating system recognize ACHI. Since SSD's are still not as cost efficient as HDD's its best to use the SSD for your operating system only with your usual games and programs installed but for storage purposes use an HDD as a secondary drive if you have room for it. Also, SSD's work differently then traditional HDD's. NEVER defragment an SSD. It will wear the SSD down extremely fast. Review: excellent drive, hassle free installation - This is the third 840 EVO 250gb purchase from desertcart in span of a month. I got one for friend, one as a boot upgrade for desktop and the most recent one as replacement for office laptop. Overall, my 5th SSD disk so far, the previous two being Crucial 60gb and Kingston 120 gb (both are working just great after 3 years now). By the way, if you are wondering why SSDs are great, a. they add few years of life to some old machines that you would have discarded b. They make boot times extremely fast, so that shutting down PC isn't a pain c. Windows performance benchmark score jumps from 5.6 to 7.9. Its 7.9 because I think it cant go up any further. d. For tech enthusiasts and IT professionals, try running your I/o benchmarks for use cases you need fast random read/writes and see how things speed up. For large sequential reads, the HDDs try to catch up. e. no need to do defrags, though you may need to do some maintenance like over provisioning, which I will talk in a bit. here are reasons I love this 840 EVO drive, besides the price - 1. Convenience - Biggest point in favour of this drive. If you are replacing your current HDD drive with this, it cant get any easier. Connect the SSD through a USB adapter to a USB port (not provided with this packaging). Install the Migration software, and just clone your drive. It worked for me 2 times in a row on a desktop and a laptop. then, just replace the drive, install magician (optional if you want most from your drive) and you are done. Migration Software takes care of partitions and clones the drive as is. However, if you are adding this as a boot drive in addition to your existing drive, then this will not help. You have to install the OS on this drive. 2. Speed - Honestly, there is as much difference between various SSDs as there is between the SSD and HDD. When you run benchmarks, things will be faster on this one, but on day to day stuff like booting, opening files, and a typical consumer type of a usage, it wont make much difference. However, if you are a tech or geek, this drive has one of the fastest read/writes I have seen. If you have plenty of RAM, you can use Rapid to do "look ahead reads" and increase read speeds over time. I tried thinking about EVO vs PRO and felt EVO was good enough for general purpose, plus some occasional high performance IT needs. 3. Noise & Size - after replacing this, the laptop and desktop went silent. you can hear just the fan. Though most current HDDs are silent too, this is 0 db. 7 mm is perfect for laptops and notebooks. I hope these last reliably as my earlier ones. Few tips on configuration. In magician you will see a bunch of options. If you want more from your Samsung 840 EVO SSD spend time going through them, they are not tough, and you will get to know through the prompts. I use over provisioning at default, switched my laptop from RAID to AHCI. Win7 and above know how to handle SSDs so you don't strictly need Samsung Magician.

I finally believe - after years of holding off, I purchased a SSD and have never been happier. My first hard drive was a 20MB (that's Mega, not Giga) that cost me around $400. It was years ago and one of the "fastest" models on the street at the time. I was stoked, as it could hold tons of my old floppy (perhaps you've never seen one, so Google what they look like) disks and kept me from having to switch disks every few minutes to play a game or run a program. As hard drives grew in size, so did software, leading to a never-ending race between manufacturers and software developers. Thankfully, the drives kept up and constantly tweaked platter capacity and spindle speed to get more power, use, and efficiency from this technology. But that's the sticking point - old hard drives required rotating disks, that needed to be "read" in order to load a program. So, no matter how fast or big they got - you still had lag time between sending the command and the actual software loading. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) have alleviated most of this lag, because there are absolutely NO moving parts. None. The entire concept (in simple terms) is similar to the USB keys we've all grown accustomed to using. The drive is basically large memory capacity memory chips stuck inside a plastic case with an advanced controller (which is tweaked by the developers) to help direct the command from the computer to locate and execute the program/command you are sending. This all happens in near real time! Imagine your computer loading in just a few seconds, instead of nearly a minute or longer. Imagine software that you use often, loading within a second of clicking it, instead of clicking and waiting as the computer sends the command, but then sits and waits for the hard drive to spin up and find the actual code, process the code and send it to the CPU for processing. Imagine not hearing the spinning sound of your hard drive any longer. Seriously - there are no moving parts to hear. This thin little drives consist of a board, memory chips, a controller, and a sprinkle of magic (okay, the last part may be just my special model...or not). The one thing to remember about these drives is that they are smaller than regular 3.5" drives. They take up less room, but also require different connectors to fasten them to your machine. Make sure your machine can hold a drive like this or can be modified to hold a drive like this (you can also buy aftermarket brackets to assist). Some folks have left the drive just sitting in their machine (not connected/secured to anything) and while this may be okay if you never plan to move the computer, I am a bit hesitant to have something that can flop around inside my case and damage other parts. As an added bonus, these drives produce very little (read: not zero, but far less than old drives) heat. Since there are no moving parts - the only heat produced comes from the electricity running through the drive when under heavy use. There is lots of talk about these drives having "limited" shelf life, because the memory can only be rewritten so often before it locks the bit. While that is true - memory like this can only be erased and written so often - but that number is far higher than any average user will ever see in their lifetime of using this drive. And when the bit does finally lock - it locks with the data that is currently on it - not "blank", which means you won't lose your data, you just won't be able to write new data to that block any longer. Not a big deal, again, unless you write/delete/rewrite tons of data to your drive on a daily basis for years on end. I've seen estimates from reputable review sites that estimate it would take the average user 5-10yrs to kill a data bit on these drives. By then, you'll likely upgrade or acquire a new machine anyway. The one thing that annoys me is the cost of these little things per gigabyte. I know the memory isn't cheap and the technology is new, but you'd think that having no moving parts is cheaper than having expensive moving parts. The good thing is - prices are coming down. Also, these drives aren't huge. While they finally have 1TB drives and growing, you're still better off using an old hard drive that holds 2-3TB for data storage and use a drive like this for your operating system (Windows, Apple OS, or Linux) and software that you want to boost. My configuration has this 256GB drive running my OS and a 1TB drive for all my data (music, movies, games, etc). The benefit is that the software you are running is still enhanced by the speed of this drive and the data being pulled from the other drive is easy and fast enough that you won't notice any issues. Overall, I'm a big fan of this technology and now consider myself a true believer of the SSD technology hype. While I have not owned this drive for longer periods yet - so cannot speak to reliability - I know that this drive has been tested by countless expert reviewers and none have found any issues to date. Samsung has an excellent software suite that enhances this drive even further and keeps it updated with the latest fixes they develop. You wont' go wrong buying a EVO series drive from Samsung - your only real decision is what size you need to meet your needs.
