I'm asking about emptying the tank BEFORE it is full. Do I have to turn the unit off first and if so, do I need to wait before turning it on again?

Hello, You don’t need to unplug or turn off the machine once you pull the bucket out it will turn off itself and once you dump the bucket and put it back it will resume working again.

How long does it usually take for a dehumidifier to dry out a room?

Depends on square footage also what percent of humidity that you want to maintain. We maintain 50% humidity in a 500 sq foot room. It takes about 2 hours to achieve that. You will also be emptying your water collection bucket about every 24 hours

Can you turn the alarm off so it doesn't buzz when full?
