Timber Press Herbarium: The Quest to Preserve and Classify the World's Plants

Dried plants, adventurous collectors, and the botanical patrimony of the world
Beautiful, informative, timely. Dr. Thiers has written an exquisite volume about an institution we frequently overlook, ignore, misunderstand - and fail to fund. Our current understanding of botanical biodiversity throughout the world is largely the result of herbaria. Without collectors, dried specimens, herbarium sheets, plant taxonomy, distribution maps, and floras, all of which comprise and depend on herbaria, we would be living on this planet with our eyes closed. We wouldn't know the difference between a food plant and a poison, a maple and a mulberry, or be able to detect the subtle shift in flowering times in response to climate change. This book is a welcome addition to the botanical literature, and it will be appreciated and enjoyed by the lay person as well as the plant scientist. Nice job, Barbara. And thank you.

Great commentary on herbaria
Just received my copy of this book and love it already. The author has painstakingly documented the history of herbaria while at the same time focused on the historic figures and institutions who were important in their development. There is also commentary on problems that herbaria are currently facing the need to address these issues. I look forward to spending hours reading the book in detail.
