After doing some cost analysis, purchasing a replacement spine was the most cost effective choice. I only needed one but had to settle for a 10 pack (still cheaper than anything else.) Though the new spine doesn't feel as heavy duty as the old spine, it seems like a good trade off because the new one is a little more flexible and far less brittle. This also made the spine much easier to trim to size. I used a pair of children's safety scissors. The locking feature is nice as the old spine didn't have it. I don't have a machine, and did the swap by hand. In all it took less than 5 minutes to achieve.
