## Description

Product Description

The Blood Brothers were an American post-hardcore band formed in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington in 1997. The quintet released five albums in 10 years, officially breaking up in 2007 and spawning the bands Jaguar Love and Past Lives. Now Epitaph reissues these four seminal albums offered in radically enhanced versions with bonus studio and live tracks and videos.

The Sound Is Your Brain Exploding Inside

*by P***N on Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2009*

Now, this, my friends, is where the Blood Brothers started to change from retarded At the Drive-In audio trainwreck clones to the full-fledged, arty, and unique Post-Hardcore (give or take) band. The spazziness, screams, dual vocalist approach, and juicy, odd, surreal lyrics are still here, only with new ideas, melody, rhythm, effects, and song structures. This is the band that was primed to explode after a couple albums of trash and hit and miss. They finally exploded here, and that's evident right from Guitarmy, with a slashing, headbanging riff, purely screaming hardcore goodness before full throttling into ________'s Greatest Hits, a ultrafast, loud, spazzy and earsplitting song, that throbs and pulses between infectious funk, and noise rock explosions before taking off like a bomb for the grand finale, taking all of it's ideas for it's climax. By the end of it, you'll be jumping around the room, pumping your fist into the air. Just right you think your getting a break, you are forced to jump around to the title track, which won't compel to you sit down until the finale, a melodic pop passage that is like drifting in the calm sea watching an island burn up in the distance. How long are these two songs put together? The whole album folds out like this, being insanely good and unpredictable in every aspect. These guys also use their music abilites to bring the song to life. Heck, The Salesman, Denver Max's instrumentation and music fits whatever the lyrics are saying, with crystal guitars, and vocals that sound like they are being heard from the front of the car in the trunk. The instrumentation here actually is quite good. Sure, they aren't virtousos, although I would call Mark Gadahjar that, especially since he's such an important part of the music (recongnize that last name? His brother plays for Gatsbys American Dream, who I also rave about as well).Needless to say, this isn't for everybody, and one who is high up their arse probably would just label this gay screamo and be done with it, not to mention that the band is mentioned on lists on amazon along with bands like Thursday, and even My Chemical Romance (morons). Let me tell you, that ain't the truth, and while I can understand that you wouldn't like it (easily, actually), these guys were much more than any of the bands. The closest genre post-hardcore that they are in doesn't have many good bands beyond At The Drive-In (other close bands in that genre are Gatsbys, Thrice, and Refused in a way, if you ask me), so these guys are heads and tow over anything that comes close to this, and beyond their shammy rip offs like Fear Before The Marching Flames.Sadly, the Blood Brothers are no more, but they left together their discography that will forever be remembered (heck, if I ever become famous, I'll make sure their albums never go out of print). They will make you jump, they will make dance (this is an EXTREMELY danceable record at parts, recalling dance punk in the vein of Gang Of Four), they will make you sing along. Get this if you want a taste of this incredible band. If you are still wanting more, check out Jaguar Love and Neon Blonde. And please, NEVER believe the fact that this album is a sellout. If you see someone who says so, smack them across the head.

"... .98 cents per minute, cash or credit check or debit..."

I don't have the proper vocabulary to describe this album, so I'll just try and keep it simple. Because when you think about it, the Blood Brothers keep it simple. One AMAZING drummer. One superb bassist who also occasionally plays the keyboards/noise distroter. One talented guitarist. And two vocalists/screamers. I could be corny and say this all adds up to one of the heaviest and most original bands around. Corny or not, it's the truth. The Blood Brothers have taken a simplistic approach to being heavy; they don't use three distorted guitars and vocal affects to be heavy. They create some of the hardest hitting music by just playing the hell out of what they have. Ferocious guitars and powerful drumming set the backbone, as the bass and distorted keyboards only add to the heaviess. The two voaclists are rarely quiet, especially at the same time. Their dynamic ability to play off of each others screams leads to a whole new dimension of vocal heaviness.Until I saw the Blood Brothers live this summer, I contributed their heaviness and talent soley to production trickery and manipulation. While I never thought it possible, the Blood Brothers were heavier, louder, angrier, and more talented live. Every song they played, new and old, sounded better than it did on CD. The number one attribute of an amazing and talented band is how they perform live, and the Blood Brothers are one of if not the best live band I have ever seen. And now for the crazy metaphor to describe the band...oh forget it, just take punk, jazz (yeah I said it) and hardcore, take all the best elements of each; the screams, the unforgivingly heavy and fast beats, spontaneous starts and stops and fits of creativity, and you'll begin to understand the sound of this band. This is possibly the Blood Brothers best CD; but I can say that it is the best example of their talent and creativity. I think that "Burn Piano Island Burn" is the band at its creative plateau, and it's only a question of how long they can mantain that level of intensity and creativity before the weight of being original brings them down to their demise. I pray that these skinny kids from Seatle can handle the weight of being one of the most orignal, talented, and entertainnig bands for decades to come.Buy this CD, along with their older material which isn't as well recorded or produced, but is played just as heavy and fast as "Burn Piano Island Burn". Then go see them live, and get up close so you can be fully blown away.My favorites are "USA Nails, Burn Piano Island Burn, Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade, and I Know Where...".

    This is really something, baby

The Blood Brothers straight up kill. Intense, youthly rebellious and aggressive, this might not be the hardcore or punk rock record of the year simply because it blends so many styles that are NOT intrinsic to those previously mentioned. This stuff is so diverse in musicality that the only things about it that lend to all the references to "punk" and "hardcore" is the aesthetic and DIY attitude present throughout the music. But this is great music, nonetheless. Tons of perks on this CD that combine well thought out lyrics with pop motifs: "Ambulance vs. Ambulance" is the only track with a true song format and is increadibly catchy, while "Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade" tosses in your favorite swingin' beats under a "that was really somethin', baby". There is nary a weak spot on this CD due to the diversity of each songs, from the epic qualities of "The Shame" to the chanting with "1-900 USA NAILS", this is just an impressive collection of music that, while those unfamiliar with the aesthetic might find unnerving, will quickly grow on even the most casual listener.
