Hell, mere aviation already requires adhering to a set of standards beyond what the average human being is accustomed to... and like it, the engineering doctrines of space exploration are written in blood. Space is hard, as the saying goes. So many things to go wrong... so unimaginably far, that on closest approach, light / EMR -- the fastest thing in the universe -- takes 3 full mins each way. Haven't read the book but enough I've talked to have... so was curious when it debuted 10 yrs ago, what would be seen on screen. Outside GWH and the Bourne films, not really a fan of Matt Damon's work. That aside, he smashed this character. Space travel -- esp to somewhere as remote as Mars -- is much like being >8K metres on Everest -- you're on constant vigilance for thousands of risks that could kill you, trying to achieve what you're there to do. Except in space, *everything* is trying to kill you... and there is no momma's leg to hide behind, taking atmosphere and food and water with you into the cold and dark. That's why Mark Watney's story is so compelling. Pretty much the worst things imaginable happened to him, on what in that timeline 10 yrs from now (20 yrs from the film's debut), appeared far more routine than for us. Dangerous assumption tho, as being an astronaut takes even more mental and physical competence than even fighter pilots... and some hint of that's palpable in every character in the Hermes crew, even when they're joking around (esp liked Michael Peña and Jessica Chastain's banter about being the only military members of the crew, and the mindset they have concerning risk rescuing Mark -- which was touching, being a veteran myself). A high level of consistent, repeatable performance of competence under duress, is possibly the only true equaliser for human beings meant to achieve, in the deadliest environment there is. He uses this competence (and not a small amt of grit and sure, fear and dark humour) to survive, in what surely would've killed a lesser astronaut and scientist. Thing about space... is even those that squeak by with passing-D-grades in its discipline, have to be far more competent than most civilians. And yet those would've buckled under the demands Mark powered thru. Best of all, was Mark's speech to future astronauts back on Earth, having survived. Teaching that space doesn't suffer fools, or procrastinators, or denialists. It's there to kill you, because you don't belong there. So if you come correct, you must be highly intelligent AND highly adaptable. Yeah, there are palpable Hollywood-isms in the script and the situations, sure. But a great movie, about a great book. Thanks ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "The Martian Extended Edition:" outstanding feature film and new bonus features make this worthwhile. *by M***S on June 22, 2016* Film director Ridley Scott is well known for releasing direct-to-disc “Extended Editions” or “Director’s Cuts” of selected movies, usually several months after the completion of their theatrical runs. His most notable Director’s Cuts, which are usually vastly superior to their shorter theatrical releases, include “Kingdom of Heaven,” “American Gangster,” “Gladiator,” and now “The Martian.” I’ve already reviewed the theatrical release version on Blu-ray disc (BD) of “The Martian” here at Amazon. I think it’s a nearly perfect blend of drama, high adventure, suspense, comedy, and realistically futuristic technology. Starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Sean Bean, and based on Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, it tells the story of how an American astronaut, presumed killed in a violent sandstorm on Mars, is left behind to fight for his survival against incredibly long odds… “The Martian Extended Edition” is a 2-BD set, with one disc containing both the theatrical release and extended edition of Scott’s feature film, and the other containing a wide variety of excellent special features – most of which are brand new. The extended edition is 151 minutes long and adds about 10 minutes of footage to the theatrical release. Most of the extra footage shows astronaut Mark Watney’s heroic efforts to survive on Mars long enough for someone to come and rescue him. A few minutes are added to various scenes back on earth at Mission Control. I didn’t see any significant differences between the extended and theatrical versions of the film, so I’m a bit undecided as to whether or not my purchase of “The Martian Extended Edition” was worth the extra money I paid for it. However, if there were anything that does make my purchase worthwhile, it would have to be that supplemental “Special Features” disc included in this 2-BD set. I thought the bonus features were all very entertaining, interesting, and helpful in enhancing my enjoyment of the feature film.
